North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The North Bay Battalion selected Swedish right winger Hampus Olsson with its first-round pick in the Canadian Hockey League' s Import Draft on Wednesday.

Left shot Olsson, who turned 19 on April 20, is a six-foot-five, 212-pound native of Angelholm.

The Battalion, slotted to exercise the 40th pick, ended up making the 34th selection after six clubs passed. The Ontario Hockey League club opted not to make a selection in the second round.

Olsson joins countryman Alex Henriksson, another 19-year-old right winger, as North Bay's two-man European contingent. Olsson replaces Swiss left winger Vincent Praplan, who would be an overage candidate next season but has said he' ll play professionally in Switzerland.

Olsson has spent several seasons playing at a variety of levels for Rogle, a club located in Angelholm. He scored 13 goals and earned 24 assists for 37 points with 115 penalty minutes in 92 games over three seasons with Rogle's junior team. Last season he also skated in 13 games with the club's entry in the HockeyAllsvenskan, the second-highest professional league in Sweden, contributing one goal. Olsson played four games with the Swedish under-19 team in 2013-14, producing one goal and one assist for two points.

Henriksson, a first-round pick in the 2013 CHL Import Draft, had 28 points, including 11 goals, in 68 regular-season games with the Troops and added seven goals and three assists for 10 points in 17 playoff games.

The two-round draft, conducted over the Internet, sees the order of selection rotate among OHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League clubs, using the inverse order of standings from the previous season.

The Sarnia Sting held the first overall pick and chose centre Pavel Zacha from the Czech Republic.
