Hershey Bears News Release

Last Week: The BEARS traveled to Syracuse last Friday night and earned the club's first road win of 2004-05 with a 1-0 shootout win at the Onondaga County War Memorial. Eric Perrin and Marek Svatos both converted goals in the shootout against Crunch goaltender Pascal Leclaire while BEARS netminder Peter Budaj stopped four of five Syracuse shooters after blanking the Crunch offense for 65 minutes. Budaj made 35 saves Friday to earn his first shutout of the season. Following a 5-1 loss to Rochester Saturday night at GIANT Center, the BEARS rebounded in fine fashion to defeat the first place Norfolk Admirals 3-2 on Sunday. Jeff Ulmer and Cody McCormick both notched second period power play goals as the BEARS came from two goals down for the win. Eric Perrin scored his first goal of the season in the third period, which proved to be the game-winning tally. Tom Lawson made 27 saves to pick up his first win of the season.

Notables: The BEARS have won three straight games on Halloween, dating back to the 1998-99 season. HERSHEY defeated Cincinnati on Halloween 2001 at HERSHEYPARK Arena 5-1, and shut out the Fredericton Canadiens 4-0 at home back in 1998. Sunday's game marked the first win at home in four tries for HERSHEY, and it also marked the first game this season the BEARS scored two power play goals in the same game. Budaj's shutout Friday night moved him up to ninth place on HERSHEY'S all-time shutout list. The third year goaltender is now in a ninth place tie with former BEARS backstops Claude Dufour and J.F. Labbe. HERSHEY won for the first time Sunday when trailing after one period, and is now a perfect 2-0-0-0 when tied after two periods. The two-game series with Providence this weekend marks the first time in nearly two years that the BEARS will host the same team on back-to-back nights at home. HERSHEY hosted the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks at GIANT Center on December 7-8 in 2002. Jeff Ulmer is HERSHEY'S nominee for CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending October 31. Ulmer scored his first goal in a BEARS uniform Sunday and assisted on another as HERSHEY edged Norfolk 3-2. The BEARS have been outshot in all seven games this season. Right wing/enforcer extrordinare Dennis Bonvie ranks second in the American Hockey League in penalty minutes with 70. Only his former Binghamton Senators teammate Brian McGrattan has more PIMS (105) entering the month of November. Peter Budaj ranks third in shootout saves percentage in the AHL at .800 after stopping four of five Friday at Syracuse.

Upcoming promotions: Saturday November 6 will be Capital Blue Cross night when the BEARS host the Providence Bruins at 7:00 p.m. A free HERSHEY BEARS/Capital Blue Cross Ice Scraper will be given away free to the first 3,000 adults through the turnstiles. HERSHEY'S annual Turkey shoot, sponsored by Canteen/Strohmann, will be held on Wednesday, November 24 when the BEARS host the Springfield Falcons at 7:30 p.m. Fans will have the opportunity to come onto the ice following the game to shoot for a free Thanksgiving turkey. In the UHL, Quad City won Saturday night 6-2 over Kansas City.
