Moose win four of five on road

The Manitoba Moose continued their remarkable success on the road so far this year by winning four games on this week's five-game road trip to improve to seven wins and two losses away from home. The trip started out with a split in St. John's, Manitoba winning 3-1 on Monday but losing 4-2 Tuesday. The Moose then turned it on with three wins in three days, Friday at Rochester (3-2 OTW), Saturday at Binghamton (5-3 W) and Sunday at Hamilton (2-1 W).

This week, the Moose return home to play the final two hockey games ever to be played at the Winnipeg Arena. Thursday, November 4 and Saturday, November 6 against the Utah Grizzlies.

The Moose face the Utah Grizzlies this week to close out the old Winnipeg Arena... Utah is yet to win a game this season after seven tries (0-6-0-1). Most of those losses have come on home ice, where the Grizzlies have an 0-4-0-1 record... Utah's leading scorer is Jeff Taffe, with two goals and three assists in five games although he has a minus-ten rating... Utah also features defenceman Nick Naumenko, who spent training camp with the Moose and former Moose Doug Doull... Goaltender David LeNeveau has an 0-3-0 record with a 3.39 goals-against average and .870 save percentage... His counterpart Jean-Marc Pelletier is 0-3-1 with a 4.67 GAA and .861 SPct... Utah's top prospect is defenceman Keith Ballard, who has three assists in six games so far. He had 36 points (11g, 25a) in 37 games for University of Minnesota last season.

MOOSE NOTES

Sunday's 2-1 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs proved to Manitoba's first win over the Bulldogs in Hamilton since February 1, 2003 when Justin Kurtz scored in overtime to beat Hamilton 3-2.

The overtime goal scored by defenceman Nolan Baumgartner in Friday's 3-2 win over Rochester was the fastest overtime goal scored by a member of the Moose in their history. Previously, the fastest overtime goal was recorded by Pat Kavanagh on March 30, 2003 vs. the Providence Bruins (0:34).

Entering the week, the Moose lead the entire American Hockey League in goals (41), assists (72), and points (113). They have also played the most games of anyone in the league with 11. Most importantly, the Moose are tied with the Manchester Monarchs for the most points in the AHL with 14 (7-4-0-0).

Peter Sarno and Jason King are tied for the league lead in points with 17 each. King has a league-leading 12 goals, four powerplay goals, and 45 shots. Sarno's 13 assists are also tops in the AHL. With Sunday's winning goal in Hamilton, Lee Goren is now tied for the league-lead with two game-winners.

So far, the Moose have enjoyed their best October ever with 14 points and seven wins. This is only the third time in their history the Moose have finished the opening month of the season above .500. Their prevous best was 13 points in 1999-00. This is also their best road start ever (7-2). Last season, the Moose did not win their seventh game away from home until Jan. 8/04.

With Monday's 3-1 victory over the St. John's Maple Leafs, Moose goalie Alex Auld captured his second win of the 2004- 05 season and the 46th win of his Moose career which moved him past Fred Brathwaite as the all-time winningest goalie in Moose franchise history. Over his four-year career with Manitoba, Auld has appeared in 103 games with a record of 47- 45-7 with eight shutouts which is also a team record. His Moose career goals against average is 2.79 with a career save percentage of .905.

Nov. 4 - Nostalgia Night

The Moose will turn-back-the-clock one final time at the Winnipeg Arena when they face the Utah Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m. They will wear commemorative uniforms back to the days of the 1950's. Prices on various concession items will also be reduced.

Nov. 6 - Arena Closing

For the final time ever, the Winnipeg Arena will be home to hockey here in Winnipeg when the Manitoba Moose face the Utah Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m. That night, the Moose will bring back 40 hockey legends, including Teemu Selanne, Thomas Steen, Eddie Olcyzk, Ulf Nilsson, and Anders Hedberg among others who once played in the Winnipeg Arena for a special pregame ceremony starting at 6:00 p.m. A special post-game ceremony will follow the game as the banners will be lowered the and lights will turned out as hockey moves to the brandnew MTS Centre on Nov. 17/04

PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE

Peter Sarno

This week's Player of the Week nominee for the Manitoba Moose is centre Peter Sarno. Over five games played, he scored two goals and added five assists for seven points. Sarno had a pair of assists on Monday in St. John's, a goal and two assists Friday in Rochester. He also netted two points with a goal and an assist Saturday night in Binghamton. Sarno continues to hold a share of the league lead in scoring with Jason King at 17 and leads the league in assists with 12.
