Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HARTFORD, Conn. - The Sound Tigers earned a point, but the Wolf Pack got the win, defeating Bridgeport 2-1 at the XL Center on Friday night.
Bridgeport thought they had scored the game-deciding goal midway through the third as Alan Quine beat Hellberg and the play was initially ruled a good goal. However, after a lengthy review, the puck was said to hit the post and crossbar before coming out, resulting in no goal.
The Wolf Pack got the only goal of the first period as they broke the scoring on the power play. Marek Hrivik took the puck at the top of the right circle and blasted a one-timer past Stephon Williams with Nicklas Jensen in front of the net. The goal was only the fifth power play marker for Hartford in 10 meetings with Bridgeport this season.
The best chance of the second period for either team came on a full 5-on-3 for the Sound Tigers with six minutes remaining in the second period. Despite a slew of shots and offensive zone time, Bridgeport could not solve Hellberg and the score looked like it'd stay at 1-0 going into the first intermission.
However, just over a minute after the power plays expired, Scott Mayfield scored one of the best goals of the year for Bridgeport to tie the game. Mayfield took the puck from Matt Finn behind his own net and skated end-to-end into the Hartford zone. Mayfield ripped a shot low to the blocker of Hellberg and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
Neither team scored in the third period, as Quine struck iron, Mike Halmo missed the net on a breakaway and the Sound Tigers could not convert on another 5-on-3 despite outshooting the Wolf Pack 30-24 in regulation.
In overtime, Chad Nehring skated in on a 2-on-1 with Brady Skjei going to the net. Nehring's pass went off a Sound Tigers' defender and came right back to him, giving him an empty net as Williams anticipated the pass going across the crease. Nehring's 20th of the season gave the Wolf Pack their 75th point on the year while the Sound Tigers now have 79.
Bridgeport's power play was non-existent in the game, going 0-for-7 in the game while Hartford's man advantage went 1-for-3. Williams made 23 saves to Hellberg's 30.
The Sound Tigers take on the Portland Pirates for Spring Fun 102 on Tuesday, March 29 for an 11:00 a.m. start.
