Monsters Hammer 'Hogs, 5-1
March 25, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In front of 13,188 fans at The Q, the team's largest home crowd of the season, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters capped their eight-game season series vs. the Rockford IceHogs with a 5-1 victory on Friday night. With the win, the Monsters improved to 36-21-5-5 overall this season and with a .612 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
A right-circle blast from Rockford's David Rundblad opened the scoring at 11:59 of the opening period at even-strength, but the Monsters responded with a power-play wrister from Steve Eminger at 17:17 to tie the game at one apiece with Daniel Zaar and Alex Broadhurst collecting assists on the play.
In the middle frame, Michael Chaput took advantage of a mishandled puck from Rockford goaltender Drew MacIntyre at 2:04 to bury an even-strength tally thanks to Zaar's lone assist. Then, at 8:33, Zaar was the beneficiary of a crisp feed from below the goal line authored by Alex Broadhurst and Chaput to collect his team-leading 18th marker of the season and a 3-1 lead for Lake Erie.
Monsters center Lukas Sedlak extended his goal streak to four games at 15:17 of the middle frame at even-strength thanks to assists from Markus Hannikainen and Josh Anderson, and proceeded to cap the scoring at 5-1 with a shorthanded finish from Anderson and John Ramage at 9:27 of the third.
MacIntyre took the loss in net for the IceHogs after allowing four goals on 17 shots faced in two periods of action before surrendering the net to Mac Carruth, who made nine third-period stops in relief. On the other side, Lake Erie's Anton Forsberg improved to 20-10-4 in net for the Monsters this year by virtue of a 30-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday road clash vs. the Grand Rapids Griffins with full coverage, live from Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
