Falcons Slip against Pirates

Portland, ME - The Springfield Falcons only trailed for 1:52 but lost by a score of 4-3 to the Portland Pirates on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena.

The Falcons found the back of the net first with a goal from Dylan Reese 4:45 into the game. His first of the year was scored on a goal-mouth scramble with assists from Michael Bunting and Craig Cunningham. Chase Balisy responded to the tie the game at 6:15. His seventh of the year was scored after his shot rolled over goaltender Niklas Treutle and into the net. Mackenzie Weegar assisted on the goal. Derek Smith returned the Falcons to a one-goal lead with his second of the season on a back-door goal. Henrik Samuelsson fed a rebounded puck to Smith after a Laurent Dauphin shot forced Pirates goaltender Mike McKenna out of the net. The Falcons killed three straight penalties to conclude the first period and hold the 2-1 lead.

The Pirates tied the game at two with a goal from Rob Schremp at 7:19 of the second period. His twentieth of the year was scored after a toe-drag gave him open ice in the slot. Schremp drove a shot over the shoulder of Treutle with assists from Kyle Rau and Cameron Gaunce. The period concluded at a 2-2 tie. Through two periods, Treutle made 29 saves on 31 shots.

3:25 into the third period, the Falcons regained their lead with a deflection goal from Stefan Fournier. His seventh of the year was scored after Greg Carey blasted a shot from the point. Smith assisted on the goal to give him a two-point night. During a Falcons' power play, Wade Megan tallied an AHL-best and Portland Pirates franchise-best sixth shorthanded goal. The forward snuck a shot between Treutle's pad and the post to bring the game to a 3-3 tie. Corban Knight assisted on the goal at 6:21. With under two minutes remaining in the game, Portland finally converted on a power play; their sixth of the night. Connor Brickley scored his seventh of the year with assists from Brent Regner and Gaunce to win the game 4-3. In the final minute, the Falcons pulled Treutle for the extra attacker which resulted in no scoring. Treutle finished with 40 saves but fell to a record of 11-16-5. McKenna won his 79th game as a Pirate, tying a franchise record. His 35 saves improved his record to 28-14-5.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena. Following tomorrow night's game, the Falcons remain on the road with a 7 p.m. game in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton against the Penguins.
