Boyd's Brilliant Start Gives Herd 2-1 Win

July 24, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

Matt Boyd only allowed two hits in his excellent start on the hill for the Bisons. Buffalo avoided a late rally from Pawtucket in the ninth to win the series opener on Friday night 2-1 at McCoy Stadium.

In the start, Boyd allowed just four base runners through seven innings. Boyd retired 19 of the last 21 batters in his brilliant performance on Friday night. The southpaw allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out seven and throwing 104 pitches, earning his third win of the year with the Bisons.

Melky Mesa hit a double in the second inning to left field to get the bats going for the Herd in the second. Following a walk by Jonathan Diaz, Dalton Pompey grounded into a force out, scoring Mesa to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead. The Bisons scored again in the sixth inning in similar fashion to put the Herd in front 2-0.

After Boyd's seven shutout innings, it was up to the bullpen to maintain Buffalo's lead. Following a potential rally in the eight, Rob Rasmussen and Gregory Infante faced a comeback of their own from the Red Sox in the ninth. Pawtucket would score their only run off of a sacrifice fly, falling short against the Herd 2-1.

Buffalo continues their three-game series vs. Pawtucket on Saturday at 6:05. The lefty Randy Wolf (6-1, 2.72) is scheduled to be on the hill for the Herd.
