Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Buffalo starter Matt Boyd blanked Pawtucket on just two hits for seven innings and closer Gregory Infante struck out Marco Hernandez to end the game with the tying runner at second base as the Bisons took the opener from the PawSox, 2-1, on Friday night before 5,879 fans at McCoy Stadium.
After being shut out for the first eight innings, Pawtucket scored a run in the ninth on pinch-hitter Garin Cecchini's sacrifice fly. Infante then fanned Hernandez on a 3-2 fastball to secure Buffalo's sixth win in seven games and the PawSox' sixth-straight defeat.
The Bisons scored each of their runs on fielder's choice groundouts, one by Dalton Pompey in the second and the other by Josh Thole in the sixth. Each tally came against Pawtucket starter Zeke Spruill (4-6), who lost despite allowing just five hits in six innings of work.
Boyd (3-1) allowed just four total baserunners in his seven innings pitched on two hits and two walks while striking out seven and throwing 104 pitches. The PawSox stranded a pair of men on base in the first and sixth innings against the left-hander.
Edwin Escobar tossed two scoreless innings of relief behind Spruill in the seventh and eighth, while Heath Hembree continued his MLB injury rehab assignment by working a scoreless ninth.
Matt Hague (2-for-4) and Andy Burns (2-for-3) each had a pair of hits for the Bisons. Jemile Weeks went 2-for-3 with a double to pace Pawtucket's six-hit attack.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night with first pitch is slated for 6:05pm. Pawtucket has yet to announce a starting pitcher, while Buffalo counters with lefty Randy Wolf (6-1, 2.72).
