Rochester Red Wings News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The Columbus Clippers scored eight runs between the second, third and fourth innings and beat the Rochester Red Wings 8-4 Friday night at Huntington Park.
The Red Wings (53-47) outhit the Clippers (55-45) 12-11 but wasted many early opportunities. Rochester would score a single run in each of the first five innings except the second but left two runners on in the first, two in the third and another in fifth. Through four innings, the Wings had nine hits but just two runs.
Rochester got on the board first against Clippers starter Will Roberts (2-1) as Reynaldo Rodriguez plated Jorge Polanco with a single. Columbus took the lead in the second against Red Wings hurler Greg Peavey (1-5) with three unearned runs, all with two outs. Jorge Polanco's throwing error allowed a run to score and the next batter, Adam Moore, hit a two-run homer.
James Beresford hit his first home run since July 17, 2014 in the third to pull the Wings within a run. Rochester had runners on second and third with one out in the inning but couldn't push across the tying run. The Clippers scored twice in the bottom half to take a 5-2 lead.
After Polanco's sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, Columbus loaded the bases with two outs to chase Peavey. Logan Darnell got a ground ball that skipped off the glove of Rodriguez at first base and deflected to second baseman Argenis Diaz who tried to get the hitter, Lonnie Chisenhall, at first base but the ball hit Chisenhall and rolled into the outfield, allowing two runs to score. A balk by Darnell scored the eighth and final Columbus run.
Peavey was charged with eight runs - five earned - on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Darnell worked 4.1 scoreless innings to finish the game with five hits surrendered and three strikeouts but did have all three inherited runners score against him.
The Red Wings pounded Roberts for 10 hits but scored just three earned runs against him in 6.0 innings.
Beresford, Oswaldo Arcia and Rodriguez, the 2-4 hitters in the order respectively, finished 7-for-13 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored in the loss. Eric Farris also added three hits to extend his hitting streak to a season-high eight games.
With the loss coupled with Scranton/WB's win, Rochester fell out of first place for the first time since July 7.
