Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) rallied from a 3-1 deficit with six runs in the fifth inning to bounce the Toledo Mud Hens 9-3 on Friday night at PNC Field. The win vaults the RailRiders (54-47) back into first place of the International League North Division. The Mud Hens fall to 43-57.
Starter Luis Severino (6-0) earned his first victory at PNC Field, despite allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. The runs and hits were the most he had allowed in a single start with SWB. Severino walked two and struck out four. Mike Belfiore (4-9) allowed seven runs on six hits and walked six batters over 4.2 innings in the loss.
Trailing 1-0 in the third, Ben Gamel bashed a triple to left-center that scored Tyler Austin. The triple was Gamel's circuit-leading 10th of the season.
After Toledo scored twice in the top of the fifth, the RailRiders used extra-base hits to grab the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame. Gamel singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Jose Pirela. Ramon Flores followed with a two-baser that scored both runners to tie the score 3-3.
Rob Refsnyder kept the rally going with a walk. Belfiore induced a pop-out to short by Cole Figueroa, but issued a walk to Gary Sanchez. Kyle Roller made the southpaw pay by slamming a double to the wall in right. Flores and Refsnyder scored to put the RailRiders on top, 5-3. Alberto Cabrera relieved Belfiore, but surrendered a two-run double to Gregorio Petit that capped the inning.
SWB polished off the scoring with two runs in the sixth. Refsnyder and Sanchez provided the run-producing hits.
The RailRiders continue their home series with the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. It's Military Appreciation Night at PNC Field with a Military Jersey Backpack giveaway, presented by MetLife, to the first 2,500 fans and postgame fireworks. Right-hander Bryan Mitchell (4-5, 3.09) will start for the RailRiders opposite right-hander Tim Melville (4-8, 4.70).
