Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA (July 24, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs dropped the first game of a three-game weekend series to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 3-2, in 11 innings Friday night. Brian Bogusevic hit a walkoff double in the bottom of the 11th off Rafael Martin to lift the IronPigs to the win. It's the sixth one-run game these teams have played in seven contests this year.
Lehigh Valley (45-55) started the scoring in the second inning. Taylor Jordan walked Erik Kratz, allowed a Jordan Danks single, and walked Chris McGuiness to load the bases. KC Serna followed with a groundout to shortstop, which scored Kratz to give the IronPigs a 1-0 lead.
Chase D'Arnaud tripled to start the IronPigs rally in the third. He scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly by Cord Phelps to push the lead to 2-0.
Syracuse (39-62) started to claw back in the fifth. Josh Johnson singled with one out, and was sacrificed to second by Jordan. Johnson scored on a single by former IronPig Darin Mastroianni to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
The Chiefs tied the score in the sixth. Jayson Werth singled to start the inning, his lone hit of the game. After IronPigs starter Severino Gonzalez retired the next two hitters, Caleb Ramsey knocked a single through the hole between first and second, advancing Werth to third. Dan Butler followed with an RBI single to left-center, scoring Werth to square the game at two.
The game stayed tied until the 11th. D'Arnaud hit a slow ground ball to third base to start the inning and beat the throw by Martinson to first for a leadoff single. After Rafael Martin retired the next two batters, Bogusevic doubled to right field to win the game.
Syracuse and Lehigh Valley return to Coca-Cola Park Saturday for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Paolo Espino is slated to start for the Chiefs, opposite David Buchanan for the IronPigs.
