Mariano Rivera Coming to PNC Field
July 24, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - Mariano Rivera, the greatest closer in baseball history, is coming to PNC Field. And the blaring of Enter Sandman is only part of the story. During a sun-splashed afternoon press conference at the ballpark's entrance plaza, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) co-managing owner David Abrams led the charge with a variety of positive announcements regarding NEPA's franchise.
In concert with the Mariano Rivera Foundation, the team announced that Mariano Rivera Day will take place at PNC Field on Thursday, Sept. 3.
"We are still working out the details but Mariano's foundation is committed to improving the lives of children and he will be making an appearance in the community as part of his visit to SWB," Abrams said. "He will then come to PNC Field to be honored as the RailRiders take on the Buffalo Bisons at 7:05 p.m. in our penultimate home game of the year."
The Rivera appearance reinforces the franchise's strong baseball ties that have previously shined in events like February's Mark Teixeira meet-and-greet and the Father's Day Yankees Legends Game just last month. The Legends Game will be an annual event at PNC Field after the Yankees' Old Timers' Day.
The team also announced plans for a new logo that will emphasize the team's regional ties along with a new slogan to push the team's season-ticket base as, "The Place to Be!"
"We want our existing supporters, those loyal fans who have been season-ticket holders for years, who support the team through inclement weather, we want you here," said Abrams. "I am making this pledge. Any former season-ticket holder is invited back to be our guest. You will be receiving invitations from us in the mail for free tickets and a meal for any RailRiders game for the remainder of the 2015 season. Please come see the new ballpark which many of you have never seen. Witness the improved fan experiences, the amazing staff, and five of the top prospects in the New York Yankees organization. I am confident that once you visit the park, you will want to be part of what we are building here, and you will come back."
The team announced a reduction in season-ticket prices and a series of experiences for those renewing their season tickets, or for new season-ticket purchasers. The highlight change has full-season ticket packages dropping from $720 to $648.
Examples of season-ticket holder events include indoor batting practice in the off-season followed by dinner in the RailRiders clubhouse. A chance to meet a favorite RailRider for a 15-minute in-person conversation. The opportunity to pull tarp on the field, shoot t-shirts into the crowd and ride around the warning track during the popular Hurl the Pearl contest. Watching batting practice from the field while you speak with RailRiders coaches, and then doing the same for the visiting team. Then watching the starting pitcher warm up from inside the RailRiders' bullpen.
"Imagine being part of something special," Abrams said in summary. "It is a new era in NEPA. A new era in SWB baseball lore and we want you here! Remember - PNC Field, RailRiders baseball and SWB...The Place to Be!
The RailRiders return home tonight for a five-game homestand at PNC Field. They will give away a special copy of Yankees Magazine to the first 2,500 fans in attendance tonight when the team hosts the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Luis Severino (5-0, 1.79) is scheduled to face southpaw Mike Belfiore (4-8, 5.09).
