Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 17th season in the American Hockey League, announced today that defenseman Johnny Boychuk has been named the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending October 19, 2008. The fifth-year blue-liner recorded one goal and six assists for seven points along with a plus-three rating in three games for the P-Bruins. Providence went 2-0-1-0 over the weekend to extend their Atlantic Division-leading record to 4-0-1-0 for nine points through five contests.
Boychuk, 24, began the weekend Friday night by dishing out a season-high three assists in Providence's 6-3 win over the Springfield Falcons en route to second star honors. He added a pair of third period points Saturday with a goal and an assist in Providence's 3-2 overtime defeat to the Worcester Sharks. The assist came on Martin St. Pierre's game-tying goal with 27 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra session. Boychuk wrapped up the weekend with two more assists, both on the power play, on Sunday in a 4-1 victory at the Portland Pirates. On the weekend, Boychuk was on the ice for nine of the P-Bruins' 12 goals.
In recognition of his achievement, Boychuk will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming P-Bruins home game.
Boychuk, tied for second in the AHL with 10 points (2g, 8a), is with his sixth team in five professional seasons after spending the bulk of 2007-08 with the expansion Lake Erie Monsters and earning his first career call-up to the National Hockey League with the Colorado Avalanche. Last year, the defenseman tallied eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points in 60 AHL games while going scoreless with a plus-one rating in four NHL contests.
The native of Edmonton, Alberta, was acquired by the Boston Bruins on June 24, 2008 from Colorado in a trade for center Matt Hendricks. Boychuk was originally drafted 61st overall by the Avalanche in the second round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Since, he has played for Colorado, Lake Erie, the Albany River Rats, Lowell Lock Monsters and Hershey Bears.
Other nominees for Reebok/AHL Player of the Week include Albany right wing Jakub Petruzalek, Binghamton Senators center Zack Smith, Bridgeport Sound Tigers center Mike Iggulden, Chicago Wolves goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, Grand Rapids Griffins right wing Darren Haydar, Hamilton Bulldogs goaltender Marc Denis, Hershey Bears center Keith Aucoin, Houston Aeros left wing Corey Locke, Iowa Chops left wing Josh Green, Lowell Devis defenseman Tyler Eckford, Manchester Monarchs center Gabe Gauthier, Manitoba Moose left wing Matt Pettinger, Milwaukee Admirals left wing Antti Pihlstrom, Norfolk Admirals center Paul Szczechura, Quad City Flames goaltender Matt Keetley, Rochester Americans center David Brine, Rockford Ice Hogs right wing Troy Brouwer, Syracuse Crunch center Craig MacDonald, Toronto Marlies center Kris Newbury, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins left wing Chris Minard and Worcester left wing Jamie McGinn.
