Lowell Splits Weekend Series with Manchester

Friday, Manchester 6 vs. DEVILS 4

In the first game of Lowell's home-and-home series with Manchester, the Monarchs proved to be victorious in a 6-4 decision at the Tsongas Arena. Manchester flew out to a quick 3-0 lead midway through the first as Teddy Purcell opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 2:12. Brad Holloway and Trevor Lewis followed with even-strength markers shortly thereafter. With Manchester up 4-1, the Devils pulled within one when Pascal Rheaume and Tyler Eckford each notched goals power-play goals over a span of 1:17 in the second period. Manchester defenseman Paul Crosty tallied the eventual game-winner just 2:07 later to put the game out of reach. Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen made 35 saves in the loss.

Saturday, Devils 2 vs. MANCHESTER 1

The Devils exacted revenge in the second game of the series with a 2-1 victory over the Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Lowell opened the scoring for the first time this year thanks to a power play goal by Rod Pelley at 3:44 in the second period. The Monarchs would retaliate on a power play of their own with 5:42 left in the third period, tying the game at 1-1. The Devils made sure the game would not go into overtime, however, as Ryan Murphy tipped in the winning goal just 52 seconds later.

In the Standings

After the second week of the their season, the Lowell Devils (2-1-0-1) remain tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with the Springfield Falcons (2-2-1-0). The Providence Bruins remain undefeated in regulation at 4-0-1-0 and still hold their reign of first place in the division with nine points. The Portland Pirates sit alone in fourth place with four points at 2-1-0-0. The Hartford Wolf Pack, Manchester Monarchs and Worcester Sharks each have one win and are in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Atlantic.

Ongoing Streaks

Jon DiSalvatore has opened his career as a Lowell Devil with a four-game point streak. The sixth-year pro has compiled a goal and six assists, currently leading his team in both assists (6) and points (7). DiSalvatore's assist total also ties him for third in the AHL. Pascal Rheaume has put together a point streak over the last three games, dishing out two assists and netting one goal.

League Leaders

With an assist on Friday against Manchester, Matt Halischuk has totaled six points (4g, 2a), tying him for first in scoring among AHL rookies. His four goals are also tops among rookies.

Around the Horns

The Devils have scored a power play goal in all four games they've played this season. They are currently ranked 7th in the league on the man-advantage at 22.6% (7-for-31)...Lowell was able to hold Manchester to a season-low 19 shots in Saturday's 2-1 win. It was the third time in team history that the Devils have held the opposition to 19 shots, tying the team road record for fewest shots allowed...With their weekend split versus the Monarchs, the Devils are now 10-10-1-1 in the all-time series.

Coming Up

Lowell battles the defending Eastern Conference Champion Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at home on Wednesday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tsongas Arena. The Penguins swept the two-game season series against the Devils in 2007-08. On Saturday, a potential battle for second place in the Atlantic Division will take place at the MassMutual Center against the Springfield Falcons at 7:00 p.m. Lowell is 5-5-0-0 all-time at the MassMutual Center.
