LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws snapped their 3 game losing streak, avoided being swept for the first time since June of 2009, and finished off their 9-game homestand on a winning note by taking the series finale from Savannah 4-3 on Tuesday night. The game featured a little bit of everything from a Major League making a rehab appearance, to the opposing manager getting tossed, to a crazy infield fly ruling that allowed the winning run to score. Lakewood finished up their homestand with a record of 5-4 as they head out on an 8-game road trip to Charleston and Greensboro.

BlueClaws RHP Garett Claypool got the start on the mound for Lakewoood, and he went 5 innings. He did not factor in the decision. Phillies LHP JC Romero then came on and pitched a scoreless 6th inning. RHP Colby Shreve threw 2 scoreless jnnings and picked up the win, and RHP Juan Sosa pitched the 9th to record his 2nd save of the year.

It was a crazy play that plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 7th. With 1 out and the bases loaded, RF Anthony Hewitt hit a pop fly on the infield between 1st and 2nd base. No signal was made for the infield fly rule, and the fielders allowed the ball to drop. When the ball landed, all 3 runners on base took off to the next base because they thought the infield fly rule was not in effect. The Sand Gnats 2B Luis Nieves fielded the ball on a hop, and threw home to C Albert Cordero. Cordero caught the throw, and stepped on home, but never tagged the runner coming from 3rd in the form of Miguel Alvarez. The infield fly rule was indeed called, though not signaled by the umpires, and thus the force at home was no longer in effect. Alvarez was called safe, he scored on the error by the catcher Cordero, and the BlueClaws stole a win 4-3.

Lakewood has a day off Wednesday, and will be back at it again on Thursday in Charleston when they will send LHP Ervis Manzanillo (0-1, 5.71 ERA) to the mound to face LHP Nik Turley (1-1, 4.10 ERA) for Charleston.
