Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws took advantage of shaky Savannah defense to score two late runs to salvage the finale of the four-game set and beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 4-3 Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. The Gnats (10-15) finished their nine-game road trip at 3-6. After an off-day Wednesday, the Gnats open an eight-game home stand Thursday night against the Rome Braves.

In a 3-3 game, the BlueClaws (11-14) took the lead on a strange play in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Lakewood RF Anthony Hewitt popped a ball on the right side of the infield. The batter was called out on the infield fly rule, but the Gnats allowed the ball to drop. The runner from third, LF Miguel Alvarez headed home and scored on an error charged on catcher Albert Cordero. It was the second error on Savannah in the inning which also saw Gnats manager Ryan Ellis ejected arguing a bunt play that put runners at first and second with no one out.

Lakewood tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning on a double, a groundout to move the runner to third, and a passed ball on Cordero. Savannah LHP Chase Huchingson was charged with the loss for giving up two unearned runs on one hit in three innings.

The Gnats did all of their scoring in the first inning. CF Rafael Fernandez and DH Robbie Shields drew walks and LF Cory Vaughn was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. 1B Sam Honeck drove home all three runners with a three-run double to center field. The Gnats' offense collected just three singles in the final eight innings of the game.

The Gnats will hand the ball to RHP Greg Peavey (1-1, 4.50) against Rome RHP David Filak (1-1, 6.91) in the opening game of the Gnats' eight-game home stand Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
