Florida Everblades News Release
BEAUMONT, TX - The Florida Everblades opened their 2008-09 pre-season action in impressive fashion blanking the Phoenix Road Runners 7-0 on Friday night at Germain Arena.
Rookie goaltender David Leggio earned the shutout by making 18 saves, including nine in the first six minutes of the contest. The Everblades defense stifled the Road Runners for the remaining 54 minutes of the contest holding Phoenix to three shots in the second period and six in the third.
Offensively the Everblades picked up two goals each from Justin Bowers, who also chipped in a pair of assists, and Danick Bouchard. Aaron Brocklehurst, Ernie Hartlieb and Andrew Fournier added the other goals.
Brocklehust opened the game's scoring 4:10 into the first period on Florida's first shot after one-timing a pass into the slot by Riley Emmerson. Bowers opened a 2-0 Everblades lead at 11:54 blasting a drop pass from Andrew Fournier past Phoenix net-minder Ryan Daniels from the top of the left circle.
The Everblades kept the pressure on in the second period using special teams to add three more goals to their total. Fournier notched Florida's first power play goal of the night at 9:02 after tapping home a centering pass at the right post to increase the lead to 3-0. Hartlieb got in on the scoring fun notching the second Everblades power play marker, letting a wrist shot go from the left circle that snuck under the pads of Daniels, who allowed the seven goals on 30 shots, at 11:20. Bouchard capped off the barrage with his first of the night while the Blades were short handed. Bouchard took a pass from Colin Nicholson at the Florida blue line and streaked down the ice before deking to the back-hand and lifting the puck over the blocker of Daniels at 13:21.
The final period saw the pace slow somewhat, but the Everblades tacked off two more goals in the final stanza. Bowers notched his second tally of the night ringing a wrist shot off the inside of the right post at 1:30. Bouchard closed out the scoring at 4:29 of the third on an assist from Bowers.
The pre-season contest also saw a pair of fights that excited the crowd of 4,050. The Everblades' Ross Carlson dropped the gloves against Phoenix's Brett Thurston just over five minutes into the contest then Florida's Emmerson got into a slug fest with James McEwan midway through the second period.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 2-for-6, while the Road Runners finished 0-for-8.
The Everblades and Road Runners play the second of two pre-season games on Saturday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena.
