Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Sea Wolves lost their preseason opener to the Charlotte Checkers by a score of 9-1 at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, N.C. on Friday night.
Charlotte exploded for four goals in the first period, with Jeff Kyrzakos opening the scoring for the Checkers during a delayed penalty at 8:49 as he redirected a point shot from Michael Busto past Sea Wolves goaltender Ryan Munce at 8:49. Veteran forward Mike Bayrack hammered in a goal at 10:10 of the first period while Mississippi's Justin Coutu was off ofr a high-sticking minor. The Checkers extended their lead to three goals when Dan McGoff took a cross-ice feed from Julien Brouillete and fired it past Munce at 13:07. The Sea Wolves surrendered a fourth goal at the 14:15 mark when Peter James Corsi poked the loose rebound of a shot from Ryan Hillier into the net after it trickled through Munce's pads.
Sea Wolves head coach Steffon Walby went shopping for goal scorers during the offseason, and one of his acquisitions, Mike Wirll, got the Sea Wolves on the board just 1:27 into the second period, as he stole a loose puck in the neutral zone, carried it past two Charlotte defenders, made a move to fool Charlotte goaltender Jeff Jakaitis and deposited the puck in the net, sliding it through the five-hole.
Maxime Boisclair restored Charlotte's four-goal lead when he took a back-door pass from Jeff Kyrzakos and roofed it over Ryan Munce's left pad at 5:35 of the second.
Munce yielded the net to rookie goaltender Justin Mrazek midway through the second period, after allowing five goals on 22 shots in 29:11 of work, while Charlotte's Jakaitis was replaced by former South Carolina Stingray Maxime Daigneault.
Mrazek made several clutch saves early after coming in, before Peter James Corsi tipped a shot from Kenny Smith past him for Charlotte's sixth goal and his second of the contest at the 19:23 mark of the second period.
Ryan Murphy and Matthew Ford chipped in goals just 20 seconds apart, at the 1:24 and the 1:44 mark respectively, and Jeff Kyrzakos notched his second of the game at 4:51 to cap the scoring.
The Sea Wolves face the Augusta Lynx at 6:00 p.m. Central Time tomorrow, with the internet broadcast at www.msseawolves.com beginning at 5:45 p.m.
The Sea Wolves open the season next weekend at Augusta on Friday night and at Gwinnett on Saturday night.
