Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -Travis Morin had a hand in all five South Carolina goals while Paul Kelly registered a hat trick as the Stingrays gained a split of their preseason series in Alaska by beating the Aces 5-1 before 5,871 Thursday at Sullivan Arena.
A portion of the proceeds from Alaska's preseason games, including Thursday's postgame jersey auction, will be donated to the American Cancer Society in Alaska and Breast Cancer Focus, Inc. Last year's fundraising efforts totaled over $105,000.
Morin scored the game's first goal Thursday night just 4:12 into the contest. After a couple of failed Aces power plays, Kelly scored back-to-back goals with the man advantage, once in a five-on-three situation, to put South Carolina ahead 3-0 after only 12 minutes. Derick Martin put the Aces on the board at 15:54 with a drive from the high slot on a power play, but Alaska rarely challenged 'Rays goalie Bobby Goepfert from that point forward.
Aces starter Chris Holt finished his night's work at 11:17 of the second period, stopping 10 of 13 shots, and watched as his replacement, Alexandre Vincent, was beaten by Matt Scherer's wrist shot just 15 seconds into his relief duty. Another power play goal by Kelly completed the scoring with 31.1 seconds left in the middle frame. A scoreless third period saw Alaska muster just five shots as Goepfert cruised to victory with 19 saves on the evening. Vincent finished with nine stops in 28:43 of action.
The loss marked only the second for the Aces in their last 11 preseason tilts. Head coach Keith McCambridge expects to pare his roster down to its season-opening number by tomorrow night.
The regular season brings arch rival Las Vegas to Sullivan Arena next Friday and Saturday, October 17 and 18. The Wranglers eliminated Alaska in five games in the conference semi-finals on their way to a Kelly Cup Finals appearance last May. Next weekend's games will be broadcast live on the flagship home of Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM, with coverage beginning at 7:00, 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
