Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Idaho Steelheads both began preseason play tonight in McCall, Idaho. The Salmon Kings started goaltender Jonathan Boutin in net while Idaho countered with Rejean Beauchemin. The only healthy scratch for Victoria was goaltender Blake Grenier.

The game began with both teams throwing the body around. The physical play saw the Salmon Kings get into early penalty trouble having to kill off two minor penalties in the period's first five minutes. Idaho applied the majority of the offensive pressure through the first 10 minutes of the game. The Kings hit their stride in the frame's second half. While on a two man advantage the Kings appeared to take a 1-0 lead when Rob Jarvis scored on a backhand, but referee Andy Thiessen waived the goal off as the net was off its moorings. With 2:31 remaining in the period Victoria put a puck past Beauchemin when Jordan Foote let a wrist shot fly from the left circle to put the Salmon Kings up 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The second period saw a flurry of action in the first five minutes. The Salmon Kings jumped out to a 2-1 lead 26 seconds in when Darryl Lloyd redirected a Rob Jarvis point shot on the power play. The Steelheads scored a power play goal less than three minutes later to cut the lead in half when a Kory Scoran point shot beat Boutin. A minute later the Kings' Devon Lang dropped the gloves with Idaho's Kyle Radke. Both players landed punches in an even tilt. Idaho tied the game after goaltender Boutin tried to play the puck from the side of the net to his defenseman, but the pass was intercepted by Kris Sparre who slipped it into the vacant net. Victoria would regain the lead before the period's end when Matt Kelly, who played at the forward position tonight, tipped a Mike Nesdill shot past Beauchemin. The Salmon Kings led 3-2 after two periods of play.

Both teams had power play opportunities through the third period's first 10 minutes, but neither team was able to take advantage. The frame's second half was highlighted by the play of Boutin. The Kings' goalie made several saves including a shorthanded breakaway on Dan Eves, four quality saves during a delayed penalty call and robbing Garrett Bembridge on rebound with a diving glove save during the subsequent power play. The Kings' took a late penalty to give the Steelheads a power play, but with the goalie pulled an errant pass was collected by Victoria's Shaun Landolt who made no mistake putting it in the empty net. Salmon Kings 4 Idaho 2.

These two teams meet again tomorrow night in McCall at 6:10 PT. The Salmon Kings kick off the regular season with a three game set in Phoenix beginning on October 17th at the US Airways Center. Victoria's home schedule begins on October 24th when the team welcomes the Stockton Thunder to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for a 7:05 p.m. game
