Buffalo Bisons News Release

BUFFALO, NY - Opening up a six-game set with a doubleheader after yesterday's rainout, the Buffalo Bisons lost both games of the twin bill against the Worcester Red Sox on Wednesday night from Sahlen Field.

It was a quiet night for the bats, as the Herd dropped the first game 3-1, before falling 9-0 in the nightcap.

Game one saw Tim Mayza open things up for the Herd on a rehab assignment as the lefty makes his way back from forearm inflammation. Mayza threw 24 pitches but got just one out while being charged with two runs on one hit and a walk, though he was squeezed on a couple borderline pitches that would've ended the inning much sooner.

Jake Elliott finished off the side, setting the stage for Max Castillo who went 5.1 innings while giving up one run, walking four, and striking out seven; the lone run he gave up was a sixth-inning homer off the bat of Ryan Fitzgerald.

The Herd's only run of the ballgame came in the bottom of the first, when Samad Taylor doubled home Jordan Groshans, but it was a quiet night for the bats against WooSox starter Brandon Walter who went six innings and gave up just the one run on four hits. Kaleb Ort then came on in the seventh and recorded the save to finish up game one.

The Herd's offence was once again quieted by a WooSox starter in game two, this time by righthander Josh Wincowski. The former Blue Jay farmhand went all seven innings and allowed just three hits and struck out six to record the complete game shutout.

The second game saw yet another tough first inning for the Herd, as Graham Spraker walked the bases loaded before a costly error by Cullen Large allowed two runs to score. A sac fly would bring home the third run, putting the WooSox up 3-0 despite not recording a hit in the frame.

Nate Pearson followed Spraker and threw two excellent innings of relief, filling up the zone with fastballs while mixing in a number of curveballs and sliders to strike out three without giving up a hit. Bowden Francis was also impressive in his 2.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and racking up four consecutive strikeouts at one point.

Worcester tacked on another six runs in the seventh off of Eric Yardley, headlined by a three-run homer by Cristin Stewart to make it 9-0 before infielder Eric Stamets came on to get the final out of the frame.

The Bisons and WooSox will continue their series Thursday night, first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. EST.
