Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, KY- The Louisville Bats (21-34) came up on the short-end of a slugfest, losing 15-14 to the Charlotte Knights (20-36) Wednesday night at Louisville Slugger Field.

Following a 53-minute weather delay to start the game, each team was more than ready to take the field, and wasted little time filling the run column, scoring early and often.

Former Bat Mark Payton led off the game with a double to left field and was promptly brought home by the next hitter, Adam Haseley, who notched a two-bagger of his own. Yermin Mercedes would bring home Haseley via a sacrifice fly to give the Knights an early 2-0 lead.

The lead would not last for long, as Lorenzo Cedrola and Cristian Santana, two of Louisville's hottest hitters, scored in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Colin Moran base hit and Juniel Querecuto sac-fly, respectively.

After a leadoff base hit out of Charlotte nine-hole in the third, Mark Payton struck again, roping a double into the right-field corner, scoring Zach Remillard from first and giving the Knights their second lead of the game, at 3-2.

Again, the lead would not last for long.

In the fourth inning, the Louisville offense exploded for eight hits, culminating in 10 runs for the inning-- the first time Louisville has reached double-digit runs in an inning since April 20, 2016, in a 16-5 Louisville win over the Columbus Clippers.

Most everyone in the lineup contributed to the big inning, with Lorenzo Cedrola and Reds' rehabber Max Schrock both hitting safely twice in the frame. In his Louisville debut, Byrd Tenerowicz also joined the fun, launching a moon shot that just barely stayed inside the park, bouncing off the left-field wall and resulting in a 2-RBI triple.

The Knights clawed back slowly and had a huge inning of their own in the ninth, scoring six runs to tie it and ultimately force extra innings, tied at 12.

In the top of the tenth, Charlotte completed the unlikely feat of regaining the lead after falling behind 12-3 in the fourth inning, and plated three more runs to push them out of reach of the Bats.

The third game of the six-game series is slated for Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Deck McGuire (0-1, 7.00) will get the start for the Bats, while southpaw John Parke (1-5, 7.46) will be on the hill for the Knights.
