Worcester Red Sox News Release

BUFFALO, N.Y. - For the first time this season, the Worcester Red Sox (28-28) delivered a doubleheader sweep, beating the Buffalo Bisons (31-24) by final scores of 3-1 and 9-0 on Wednesday at Sahlen Field.

First inning runs were a theme throughout the day, and the WooSox set the tone early in game one. Two batters in, Connor Wong doubled, and after a walk, Rob Refsnyder smacked a ground ball double down the right field line. The swing plated two, upping Refsnyder's RBI total to 28 on the season and putting the road team on top 2-0.

Buffalo got one back in the bottom of the first on a Samad Taylor RBI double, but that would be the final mistake made by Worcester starter Brandon Walter.

In his second Triple-A start, the left-hander got his first win at the level, going six innings with the following line: 1 ER, 4 H, 5 K, 3 BB.

Ryan Fitzgerald tacked on a key insurance run in the seventh inning-the final scheduled frame of the doubleheader-with a solo home run. The homer, which easily cleared the right field wall at Sahlen Field, gave Fitzgerald his 11th home run of the year.

Kaleb Ort added a scoreless seventh, earning his seventh save of the year to give the WooSox a 3-1 win.

In game two, Worcester managed to plate three first inning runs without a single hit. After a groundout, the WooSox worked three straight walks, loading the bases for Christin Stewart. The left-hander hit a grounder to first that was misplayed by Cullen Large-by the time it was retrieved, two runs were home. Ronaldo Hernandez was next, and he cracked a sac-fly to left to make it 3-0.

That was more than enough support for starter Josh Winckowski, who became the second WooSox pitcher to work seven innings this season. The right-hander did not give up a run, striking out six and allowing three hits with one walk.

Worcester blew the game open in the top of the seventh, starting with an RBI double by Grant Williams (his first RBI since 4/27), a triple by Jarren Duran that plated Williams and an RBI single from Fitzgerald to make it 6-0.

A walk followed Fitzgerald's single, putting two on for Stewart, who came through with the biggest blow of the day: a three-run opposite field home to make it 9-0. Winckowski breezed through the bottom of the seventh, sealing a doubleheader sweep for the road team.

The WooSox continue the road series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. against the Buffalo Bisons, affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. On the mound, Connor Seabold makes his first start since returning from the IL, facing Casey Lawrence (7-1, 2.00). Radio coverage is live at 6:45 p.m. on 9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
