Wednesday - 8:07 p.m. ET - CHS Field - St. Paul, MN
Radio: Fox Sports 1280/iHeartRadio | TV: MiLB.tv
RHP Sterling Sharp (1-1, 5.14) vs. RHP Aaron Sanchez (1-0, 3.60)
MILD WINGS: The Rochester Red Wings dropped the series opener to St. Paul, 10-6, who used a fourth-inning grand slam to push past a first-place Rochester squad...starter Jackson Tetreault struggled out of the gates, working 3.2 innings while allowing eight runs on seven hits until being relieved by RHP Jefry Rodriguez who allowed a pair of runs to score in his 1.1 innings of work...LHP Jace Fry, RHP Patrick Murphy, and RHP Tyler Clippard covered the remaining three innings, working one a piece and surrendering just one hit as a group...catcher Tres Barrera and designated hitter Joey Meneses each homered and picked up multi-hit performances in the loss...center fielder Andrew Stevenson picked up a pair of knocks, as did first baseman Jake Noll who racked up a double as part of his two-hit night...RHP Sterling Sharp gets the ball for the Wings tonight and will face off against his former Red Wings teammate, RHP Aaron Sanchez.
JOEY'S CRYSTAL BALL: Last night DH Joey Meneses went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, reaching base in four of his five plate appearances...his seventh-inning homer was the righty's 13th blast of the year, good for fifth in the International League...during his 2018 MVP season (LHV), he posted a .296 batting average (56-for-189) with 10 homers and 30 RBI through 52 games played and is currently posting a league-leading .335 batting average (68-for-203) with 13 homers and 39 RBI through the same number of games...Meneses would go on to finish 2018 batting .311 (153-for-492) along with 23 homers and 82 RBI...at this point in the season Meneses is on pace to go 184-for-550 (.335) with 35 homers and 106 RBI...his projected 184 hits would be the most in a single season since Adam Eaton had 186 hits in 2012 (RNO).
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: The pair of doubles that came from Outfielder Andrew Stevenson (16) and first baseman Jake Noll (15) propelled them to a tie for first and second in doubles, respectively, in the International League...Stevenson has smacked at least one double in seven of his last 10 games played, currently holding down a two-game double streak (Longest: 5G, 5/26-6/2)...additionally, Stevenson is now tied fourth for total hits (58) in the IL.
WE'RE STILL GETTING SETTLED: The Wings dropped the series opener for the fifth time this season, making them 5-5 in the first game of a series, despite being an International League-best 35-20...after being the first to cross home plate in yesterday's game, the Wings tallied just their fifth loss when scoring first in 2022, bringing them to 18-5 when scoring first...Rochester's road loss moves them to 17-8 on the year while away from Frontier Field, the best road record in the IL.
POWER SURGE: Catcher Tres Barrera slugged his seventh homer of the year yesterday with his fourth-inning solo-blast...the seven homers in 38 games this year dwarfs his 2021 total which amounted to three homers in 54 games with Rochester...in 49 fewer at-bats and 16 fewer games, Barrera has four more hits, five more RBI, and has a batting average .116 points higher than his 2021 totals...the catcher ranks third on the Wings squad in batting average (.317, 38-for-120) and homers (7).
STILL TOP DAWG: Even with yesterday's loss to St. Paul, the Wings still sit atop the International League-East with a 35-20 record...their 3-game lead over second-place Buffalo is the largest division lead at the Triple-A level with Nashville (MIL) sitting atop the IL-West by two games over Columbus (CLE)...headed into last series with Buffalo, Rochester had just a +1.5 game lead over the Bisons for first place in the International League-East...Rochester has held at least a share of first place for 32 days and counting...the Red Wings' 35 wins is the most in the International League...the last time Rochester had the most wins in the International League this late in the season was 2016 when they were in a three-way tie at 31-24 through 55 games (SWB & COL).
WHEN SHARP IS SHARP: RHP Sterling Sharp will get the start today as the Wings look to bounce back following a 10-6 loss...in games where the righty starts following a loss, the Wings are 4-0, thanks to Sharp's 3.38 ERA in those games (16 IP/6 ER)...Rochester wins when Sharp is sharp, going 4-1 in contests where he pitches four or more innings...the starter will look to build on his 4.95 ERA in May (20 IP/11 ER) where he gave up more than two earned runs just once (5/20 vs. LHV) in five outings.
NO NEW FRIENDS: The Rochester Red Wings face off against the Minnesota Twins Triple-A affiliate, a title the Red Wings claimed for 17 seasons (18 years including '20)...the Saint's roster features five former Red Wings, including two coaches, who combine for 333 games played in a Wings uniform...Saints manager and 2020 Red Wings Manager (COVID) Toby Gardenhire leads the group with 153 games played in a Red Wings uniform, having done so during the 2010 and 2011 seasons...Virgil Vasquez, Gardenhire's pitching coach, appeared in 16 games for the Red Wings during 2013-14...Jake Cave (107 games), John Andreoli (43 games), Caleb Hamilton (11 games), and recently-acquired Aaron Sanchez (3 games) round out the group who will be looking to inflict damage upon their former home...Co-Pitching Coach Cibney Bello also spent time with Rochester in a similar role in 2019.
