Durham Bulls News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - Durham catcher Ford Proctor clubbed two hits while driving in two runs, with left fielder Josh Lowe and second baseman Xavier Edwards each adding multi-hit efforts, however Memphis third baseman Cory Spangenberg and shortstop Chase DeJong each homered and combined for five hits and three RBI in the Redbirds' 6-3 win over the Bulls on Wednesday evening at AutoZone Park.
Durham struck first in the opening frame courtesy of 2B Xavier Edwards' line drive RBI single that plated Jonathan Aranda. Memphis would answer with DeJong's solo homer in the last of the first before taking the lead on Spangenberg's solo blast in the third. Proctor's run-scoring single would then even the contest at 2-2 in the fourth.
After the Redbirds tallied two scores in the sixth to go up 4-2, Proctor would come through again, this time in the seventh, with his second RBI single of the evening to make it a one-run game. Memphis, however, would bring across two more runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 6-3.
Spangenberg (3-3, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB) recorded a game-high three hits, while DeJong (2-3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI) was one of four other Redbirds batters to tally two or more hits. Proctor (2-4, 2 RBI), Edwards (2-3, RBI, BB) and Lowe (2-4, R, 2B), meanwhile, led Durham's order with two hits each.
Redbirds' starter Matthew Liberatore (6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) earned the victory, while four relievers combined for the final three frames Bulls righty Easton McGee (5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) suffered the defeat.
The two teams are set to continue their six-game series on Thursday night, with first pitch scheduled for 8:05pm ET. RHP Tommy Romero is expected to get the nod for Durham, with RHP Aaron Brooks anticipated to toe the rubber for Memphis.
The Bulls return to Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday, June 14 to start a six-game home series versus the Louisville Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. First pitch of that series' opener is set for 6:35pm.
