Bisons Fall Short in Late Rally
August 18, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Buffalo was trailing 6-0 before their rally in the fifth. However, the Bisons came short of completing the comeback against Rochester on Tuesday night at Frontier Field, 6-5. The Herd is now 19-30 in one run games, which seem to be a struggle for Buffalo.
Rochester scored four runs in the first inning and adding two more runs in the fourth, the Bisons needed to rally to keep their playoff hopes alive. In the fifth inning, Buffalo led off with a walk from Josh Thole and a single courtesy of Caleb Gindl. After another walk from Jon Berti, leaving the bases loaded, Andy Burns took advantage of the Red Wings miscues and reached first on a force attempt, scoring Thole from third. Alex Hassan singled to right field, scoring Gindl and Berti to cut the Herd's deficit in half.
Leading off the eighth inning rally for Buffalo was Ty Kelly with a ground rule double over the left field wall. Following another walk from Thole and single from Gindl, Dalton Pompey hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Kelly from third. Berti would hit a ground ball single to left field to score Thole, cutting the Bisons deficit to one run. Unfortunately, the rally caps ran out of power in the ninth as the Bisons went in order, losing their second straight to Rochester by one run. With Rochester's four run first inning, it made Jeff Francis' attempt to settle down and help the Bisons comeback difficult. After the Red Wings added two more runs in the fourth, Francis didn't return to the hill, allowing nine hits and striking out four.
Buffalo will try to avoid the sweep against Rochester on Wednesday for a 1:05 matinee. The Bisons will have a day off on Thursday before returning back to Coca-Cola Field on Friday against Syracuse for another Thruway Cup matchup.
BISONS NOTES:
Prior to Tuesday's game, the Blue Jays announced that the team selected the contract of OF Ezequiel Carrera from Buffalo...The Bisons also announced that pitcher Drew Hutchison will get the Sunday afternoon start for Buffalo. Hutchison made his debut in Buffalo in August 2013, recovering from Tommy John surgery. Since then, he's had 23 wins with the Blue Jays (12 this season).
