Tuesday featured a pitching rematch from August 13 when Logan Darnell pitched 5 1/3 strong innings (no decision) as the Wings beat Jeff Francis and the Bisons. After Darnell worked around a first inning double Tuesday, the Wings took an early lead.
Byron Buxton extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a lead-off double into the left field corner, and a bunt hit by James Beresford put runners at the corners. Reynaldo Rodriguez singled up the middle on a ball that bounced off second base, bringing in Buxton and putting the Wings ahead 1-0. After working a full count, Kennys Vargas blasted a double over the head of center fielder Dalton Pompey, scoring Beresford and Rodriguez for a 3-0 lead. Jose Martinez added an RBI single later in the inning for a 4-0 advantage.
After a high-scoring first for the Wings, dominant pitching was the theme for the next few innings. The first inning double by Darnell was the only hit he allowed through the first four innings.
After failing to manufacture a base runner in the second and third innings, the Wings got their bats going again in the fourth. Danny Santana led off the inning with a double, and two batters later, scored on a base hit by Argenis Diaz. Eric Fryer got in on the action, knocking a base hit of his own. Buxton continued with his hot bat, scoring Diaz on another Wings base hit, and increasing the lead to 6-0. Buxton's RBI single gave him his sixth multi-hit effort in his twelve games as a Red Wing this season.
Darnell found himself in trouble in the fifth inning, issuing the leadoff walk to Josh Thole. He gave up his second hit of the game to Caleb Gindl, and after retiring the next two batters, walked his fourth batter of the game to load the bases. On what seemed like a routine ground ball, Diaz dropped the potential inning-ending toss from Santana, allowing Thole to score. Alex Hassan then scored two runs on a base hit, cutting the Wings' lead to 6-3.
Francis did not return for the fifth inning, and was replaced by former Red Wing Bobby Korecky. Francis pitch four innings, allowing six runs and nine hits, while striking out four. Francis threw 74 pitches, 53 for strikes.
Despite the pitching change, the Wings' bats stayed hot. Xavier Avery got on base with a one out single, and he stole second base to put himself into scoring position. A few pitches later, Avery attempted to steal third, but was tagged out on the slide. Santana punched a ball to deep center, earning himself a triple, and his second extra base hit of the night. The Wings weren't able to capitalize, however, as Martinez flew out after a seven-pitch at bat.
After working part of the sixth inning, Darnell's night came to an end. Darnell pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing only three hits, three runs (zero earned), and five walks, while striking out three. Darnell threw 87 pitches, 51 for strikes.
Darnell was replaced by Tim Shibuya, who was making his Triple-A debut. After allowing a hit to Jonathan Diaz, he forced the next batter to line out, ending the inning and recording his first Triple-A out. Shibuya allowed two hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Aaron Thompson started the eighth inning on the mound for the Red Wings, and the Bisons quickly combined a double and a walk to bring the tying run to the plate. A single loaded the bases with none out, and Mark Hamburger took over for Thompson. Hamburger got a fly out, and a sacrifice fly brought home a run and made it 6-4 Wings. Jon Berti drilled a single to pull the Bisons to within a run,
Michael Tonkin took the mound in the top of the ninth inning with a 6-5 lead. He set down the side in order to pick up his 14th save.
NOTES: Before the game, the Wings activated SS Danny Santana from the disabled list, and OF Eric Farris was placed on the DL (left hamstring strain).
