Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens were back in action Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field in game two of the short series against the Gwinnett Braves. Toledo lost Monday night, but not before its offense reeled off thirteen hits against the Braves in game one. With a quality night out of their lineup on Monday, they looked to carry their sucess into Tuesday night. The Hens' bats did just that from the very start as they quickly put up a six spot off Gwinnett starter Victor Mateo.
Getting things started was none other than Mike Hessman slugging an RBI double, bringing around table setter Daniel Fields. The double was followed by a two RBI single from Marc Krauss, and an RBI double from Manny Pina, as Mateo's night on the mound looked to be a short one. With a 3-0 score, the Toledo offense was not finished in the first as Josh Wilson hammered just his second big fly of the year over the left field wall, extending the lead to six. Mateo exited after just 0.2 innings, tagged with all six earned runs. Alexi Casilla and Steven Moya widened the lead in the bottom of the fourth with RBI extra base hits, Casilla's a triple and Moya's a double.
On the other side of the ball, it was Kyle Ryan taking the hill for Toledo, seeking his second win of the season for the Hens. Ryan has seen plenty of action in both the Hens' starting rotation and the Tigers' bullpen this season as the lefty has been a consistent call up for Detroit manager Brad Ausmus. Tuesday was Ryan's first start since being optioned from Detroit on August 14th. The southpaw had a nice night on the bump shutting down the Braves' offense for 6.2 frames, surrendering just one run on six hits, earning the win.
Relieving Ryan's efforts were right handers Josh Zeid and Jeff Farrell out of the Hen pen. The duo combined for 2.1 scoreless frames securing the win for the home team.
The Hens take their act on the road Wednesday evening as they take on the Durham Bulls in a 7:05 start at Athletic Park.
