August 18, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
A Thursday night home opener on April 14 at 7:05 p.m. against the Pawtucket Red Sox, 18 home games against either the Yankees' or Red Sox' Triple-A affiliate as well as 33 games tabbed for either a Friday, Saturday or Sunday highlights the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 2016 home schedule, the club announced today.
The ninth season in club history kicks off Thursday, April 14 with the IronPigs home opener against the Pawtucket Red Sox to commence a six-game homestand which also includes games against the Rochester Red Wings and Syracuse Chiefs. In total, the Pigs will play just eight April home games at Coca-Cola Park.
The 144-game schedule once again features 72 home games at Coca-Cola Park although 51 of those dates occur during the traditional summer season that begins with Memorial Day weekend. The home schedule coincides with a number of celebrated summer holidays, including Cinco de Mayo (May 5), Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30), Father's Day (June 19), the week leading up to Independence Day (June 27-July 3) and Labor Day weekend (Sept. 3-5).
The IronPigs host their fiercest rival - the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees -- for a total of eight games beginning with a two-game set, May 5-6. The teams will also square off at Coca-Cola Park for a four-game series Aug. 1-4 and a brief two-gamer Aug. 22-23. The winner of the annual series between the IronPigs and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders captures the IronRail Trophy along with a number of other unique bragging rights and incentives.
The Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston's top Minor League affiliate, will play a total of ten games at Coca-Cola Park with series scheduled for April 14-15, May 2-4, Aug. 15-17 and Aug. 30-31. The "Bacon and Eggs" series against the Toledo Mud Hens returns May 19-22 while the Durham Bulls make their only trip to the Lehigh Valley during a three-game set from June 10-12.
Weekends once again dominate the home schedule as the IronPigs will host 11 games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a total of 33 contests.
The 2016 season takes a three-day pause July 11-13 for the annual Triple-A All-Star game between the International League and Pacific Coast League. The 2016 game will be held in Charlotte, N.C. on July 13. The Pigs season opener will take place at Syracuse on Thursday, April 7 at 2:05 p.m.
Coca-Cola Park will once again play host to a number of non-baseball events in 2016, including the 3rd annual "Fourth on the Field" on Monday, July 4 featuring a special holiday fireworks display, mouth-watering food options from the local and regional food truck community along with live music and family-friendly entertainment.
The IronPigs will play each team in their division (The North Divison) either 17 or 18 times and teams in the South and West Division anywhere from six to eight times. Lehigh Valley's North Division opponents are the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto), Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston), Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota), Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York-A) and the Syracuse Chiefs (Washington). Teams in the South Division are the Charlotte Knights (Chicago-A), Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay), Norfolk Tides (Baltimore) and Gwinnett Braves (Atlanta). The West Division consists of the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland), Louisville Bats (Cincinnati), Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh) and Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit).
Monday through Friday games remain predominately scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with exceptions for Education Day #1 on May 4 (10:35 a.m.), Education Day #2 on May 18 (10:35 a.m.) and Camp Day on July 27 (11:35 a.m.). Saturday games are still set for 6:35 p.m. and Sunday games are scheduled for 1:35 p.m. with the exclusion of Sunday, July 3 at 6:35 p.m.
