Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Moosic, Pa. - The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) dropped their third straight game, falling 3-1 to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Tuesday night at PNC Field. The three-game slide is the first since the All-Star Break for the RailRiders (69-55). The IronPigs (55-69) evened the "IronRail Series" at 7-7.
Starter Eric Wooten (2-4) shouldered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. The left-hander also walked four and whiffed a quartet of IronPigs. Sean O'Sullivan (2-2) turned in his best performance with Lehigh Valley. The right-hander blanked SWB over eight innings. He finished the night allowing an unearned run on three hits while weaving together a season-high nine strikeouts over 8.1 innings. Dustin McGowan pitched out of a bases loaded jam for his 10th save.
The IronPigs scored the game's first tally when Tyler Pastornicky was awarded home on a balk in the third inning. Following a hit by Brian Bogusevic and a walk to Russ Canzler, Tyler Henson unloaded a two-run double of the left-field wall to push the advantage to 3-0.
O'Sullivan held the RailRiders to four base runners over eight innings before issuing a lead-off walk to Ben Gamel in the ninth. Rob Refsnyder hit into a fielder's choice at second and McGowan entered for O'Sullivan. Jose Pirela lined a clean single through the right side. SWB broke up the shutout when a Gary Sanchez grounder towards shortstop Chase d'Arnaud was airmailed into right field.
Refsnyder scored on the error and the RailRiders managed to load the bases on a walk to Slade Heathcott. Third baseman Cole Figueroa narrowly missed a potential game-winning grounder down the first base line before grounding out to first to end the game.
The RailRiders continue their series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Philadelphia Phillies) on Wednesday night with a first pitch at 7:05 p.m. from PNC Field. Right-hander Brady Lail (1-1, 4.50) makes his fourth start for SWB and is scheduled to face left-hander Anthony Vasquez (7-5, 4.45). The RailRiders will host "Mariano Rivera Day" on Thursday, September 3rd, against the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays) with an appearance by the Yankees' legendary closer himself.
