Big Third Period Leads Solar Bears to 4-1 Win

Orlando, FL - The Solar Bears broke open a 1-1 game with three third period goals to take down the Elmira Jackals 4-1 at the Amway Center on Thursday night. F Mike Ullrich notched his second goal of the season 58 seconds in the third to collect the game winning goal, and Orlando scored twice in 1:08 halfway through the frame to take control of the contest.

An early period power play helped Orlando jump out to an early lead. F Andrew Johnston moved a puck free to F Tyler Murovich, and after his first attempt was stopped in front Murovich jumped on his own rebound and slipped a shot inside the left post at 6:54. The Solar Bears held off a late surge by the Jackals to take the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Elmira tied the contest just 2:11 into the second stanza. A shot from the blue line was stopped by goaltender John Curry, but F Artem Demkov secured the rebound and lifted the puck under the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1. The goal stretched Demkov's goal streak to five games.

Right off the bat in the third frame, Orlando regained the lead. D Bryce Aneloski skated the puck up the right wing and a fed a pass across the goalmouth to F Mike Ullrich who slammed it home 58 seconds into the period. Orlando increased their lead to 3-1 when forward C.J. Severyn cut into the high slot and blasted a wrister into the top corner of net at 8:33. The Solar Bears struck again 1:08 later when D Zachary Yuen fired a slap shot through traffic and F Scott Tanski cleaned up the rebound for the final goal of the game. Goaltender John Curry stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced to earn first star honors.

Notes:

F Francis Verreault-Paul played his first game as a member of the Solar Bears tonight. He earned an assist in the third period... Orlando has scored the first goal of the game in all five of their home games... D Paul Baier returned to the Solar Bears lineup tonight... F David Rutherford returned to the Solar Bears lineup tonight... This contest marked the first time this season the Solar Bears have played a non-South Division opponent.
