Stingrays Extend Streak with 4-2 Win over Road Warriors

Greenville, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (8-0-0-1) extended their season-opening point streak to nine games and winning streak to eight contests with a 4-2 victory over the Greenville Road Warriors (3-5-0-0) Thursday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

The Stingrays dominated the first period outshooting the Road Warriors 23-12, but Greenville goaltender Jeff Malcom (L, 52 saves on 56 shots) kept the contest scoreless. After two periods, the Stingrays reached a new season-high with 44 total shots and were rewarded with goals from forwards Chad Painchaud and Marc Hagel for a 2-0 lead moving into the second intermission.

Painchaud broke the scoreless tied on the power-play blasting a shot under the blocker of Malcom from the top of the right-wing circle at 14:13 with help from forward Chris Langkow and defenseman Steve Spinell. Hagel made it a two-goal lead moments later with his fourth goal of the season tapping a feed between the legs of Malcom. Defenseman Scooter Vaughan and forward Patrick Gaul added assists.

The Road Warriors jumped on the board 16 seconds into the third period with a tally from defenseman Sam Klassen beating Stingrays netminder Jeff Jakaitis (W, 33 saves on 35 shots). Forward Jordie Johnston earned the lone assist. Hagle made it 3-1 Stingrays with his second tally of the night at 3:39 from forwards Andrew Cherniwchan and Peter Boyd. At 10:11, forward Jordan Owens cushioned the Stingrays lead with his fifth goal of the season from forward Scott Campbell and defenseman Luka Vidmar, but the Road Warriors pulled it back within two off the stick of J.M. Rizk at 16:45. Forwards Guillaume Asselin and Greger Hanson registered assists. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play while the Road Warriors went 0-for-4 and outshot Greenville 56-35.
