Idaho Misfires in Loss to Alaska

Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID (11/6/13) - The visiting Alaska Aces scored three times in a seven-minute span of the second period and goaltender Mark Guggenberger made it stand up as the Aces shut out the Idaho Steelheads, 3-0, in front of 3,615 at CenturyLink Arena in Boise.
The Aces have now pitched three consecutive shutouts dating back to November 2.
Neither team scored in the opening frame thanks in large part to Idaho goaltender Pat Nagle who made a sensational, goal-mouth save with his blocker hand on an early Alaska power play opportunity. Idaho would get a four-minute power play opportunity in the latter stages of the period but came up empty.
The game remained tied for the first six minutes of the seconds before Alaska broke through at 6:34 when Shawn Skelly tapped in his own rebound from the top of the crease for his first of the season. Just under five minutes later, on the power play, Andy Taranto's shot deflected past Nagle off a Steelhead teammate to extend Alaska's lead to 2-0. Then, less than two minutes later, at 13:23 of the second, a failed clearing attempt was held at the right-wing wall by Peter Sivak. He centered to Nick Mazzolini all alone in the right-wing circle for a spinning wrister past Nagle to make it 3-0. All three goals in the game were scored in a window of six minutes and 49 seconds.
From there, it was Guggenberger's game. The third-year pro snagged an Etienne Boutet point shot through traffic and, shortly thereafter, robbed Justin Mercier at point blank range with the glove to maintain the shutout.
Nagle took the loss for Idaho (3-3-1), stopping 32 of 35 Alaska shots. Guggenberger was the winner for Alaska (8-1-0) by stopping all 21 Idaho shots. Idaho came up empty on all five of its power-play attempts while Alaska was 1-3 with the man advantage.
The homestand continues on Friday and Saturday night when Idaho hosts the rival Alaska Aces. Tickets are available by calling the CenturyLink Arena box office at 208-331-8497.
