November 7, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Goaltender Mark Guggenberger made 21 saves for his first shutout of the regular season and the Alaska Aces used three goals in the second period to skate past the Idaho Steelheads in a 3-0 victory, before 3,619 fans at CenturyLink Arena on Wednesday.
The Aces won their eighth straight game and stayed one point back of Florida for the top record in the ECHL. The Aces also extended their team shutout streak to 209:03 - the last to score a goal against them was Jordan Knackstedt of Bakersfield in the second period on Friday.
In the process, the Aces tied the league record with their third straight shutout (shared by South Carolina, Florida and Hampton Roads). Also in sight is the ECHL shutout streak record, held by Ontario (regular season) at 224:14 in 2011-12 and Hampton Roads (overall) at 236:03 in 1996-97.
After a scoreless first period, Shawn Skelly broke the tie with a rebound at the goal mouth at 6:34 of the second period for a 1-0 lead, followed by Andy Taranto's fourth goal on the power play with 8:36 left after he tucked a forehand bid past Pat Nagle.
Peter Sivak then hit a crisp, tape-to-tape pass to Nick Mazzolini at the right circle, who buried a snap shot over Nagle's glove just 1:59 later for a 3-0 bulge.
The Aces shut down Idaho on seven shots in the third period and Guggenberger denied Idaho captain Justin Mercier on a redirection at the goal mouth with less than six minutes left to preserve the shutout.
Nagle took the loss on 32 saves.
NOTES: Scratches for the Aces included Ben Parker, Robert Farmer, Sean Curry, Ross Ring-Jarvi, Zach Davies and David Eddy ... the shutout streak is the longest for the Aces since the 2010-11 season, authored by Gerald Coleman and Adam Courchaine ... the Aces improved to 4-0 on the road to start the season ... Alaska owned the shots on goal count, 35-21 ... Sivak's assist on Mazzolini's goal gave him points in eight of the first nine games ... Mazzolini extended his scoring streak to six games.
