April 11, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV â The Wheeling Nailers announce today that they have loaned forward Armands Berzins to the Latvian National team for IIHF World Championship
The World Championship is comprised of the best players from each country including players from the NHL competing against each other for the title of World Champions.
The 6'3" 215 pound native of Riga, Latvia is competing for his country for the seventh time. He has played in the World Junior Championships five times, three times for the Under 18 tournament playing in 24 games recording 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points.
Berzins most recent international play was earlier this season for the Olympic Qualifying tournament, when the Nailers loaned him to help Latvia qualify for the Olympics. He played in three games only registering one goal, but it was one of the most important goals in Latvian history. Latvia trailed Belarus 4-2 with 11 minutes left, on a power play the Latvians pulled their goalie and Berzins put one in to cut the deficit to one. Berzins' goal swung the momentum and Latvia went on to win the game 5-4 and qualified for the Olympic Games in 2006. It will be only the third time Latvia has played in the Olympics, they participated in 2002 and 1936.
