CLEVELAND, OH - Goaltender Jonathan Bernier wins the battle of the netminders with his first shutout of the season as the Manchester Monarchs blank the Lake Erie Monsters 1-0 in a shootout victory in front of 3,359 at the Quicken Loans Arena on Saturday afternoon for their third win in a row.
Manchester (6-6-0-3) picked up their third consecutive road win to move into a tie for fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 15 points. Lake Erie (5-9-0-2) is ranked sixth in the North Division with 12 points.
With the help of their posts and the crossbars, Bernier and Monsters goaltender Tyler Weiman each stymied their opponents by keeping the puck from crossing the goal line through 65 minutes of play.
Left wing Vladimir Dravecky was the first shooter for the Monarchs in the shootout. He ripped a wrist shot from the hash marks that Weiman snatched up with his glove for the first save. Right wing Teddy Purcell took his turn next and his backhander was stopped on the doorstep. The third shooter for Manchester, center Justin Azevedo snuck the puck over the line just inside the right post. Weiman's momentum carried his body into the net as he tried to make the save but it was too late, the puck had already bounced in and out of the net for the only goal of the game. Center Michel Leveille was the final sniper for the Monarchs and Weiman made the glove save.
On to the shootout, Bernier was solid stopping all five shooters. Monsters right wing Chris Stewart and center Marty Sertich were the first two shooters but neither one was able to get a shot off. Center Bryan Marshall missed the net wide on his shot followed by center T.J. Galiardi's shot being stopped with Bernier's blocker. The final shooter for the Monsters, center Philippe Dupuis was poke checked by Bernier and then his shot was stopped at the right post with the tip of the netminder's skate.
"It was an outstanding road win for us," said Head Coach Mark Morris. "We got in to Cleveland at the wee hours of the morning and had little time to prepare and the players responded well. It was a huge effort from everyone. Bernier was spectacular in the shootout and Azevedo found the back of the net in the shootout and that was the decision maker."
Bernier (4-1-2) earned his fourth win of the season stopping all 27 shots he faced in regulation and all five shootout snipers. Weiman (3-3-1) stopped all 27 shots he faced in regulation and 3-of-4 shooters in his first shootout loss of the season.
Manchester went 0-for-4 on the power play. Lake Erie was also 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
