
Falcons Host The Bruins Tonight

The Springfield Falcons and Providence Bruins meet for the third time this season, but will face-off for the first time in Springfield when they continue their rivalry on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center. The Falcons and Bruins met twice in Providence during the first two weeks of the 2008-09 campaign with the Bruins beating the Falcons in overtime by a score of 4-3 on October 12, followed by a 6-3 Providence victory on October 17. Johnny Boychuk has led the offense against Springfield this year with five assists in two games, while Martins Karsums and Martin St. Pierre are second with two goals and two assists each. Viacheslav Trukhno leads the Falcons in scoring against the Bruins this year with four assists in two games, while Theo Peckham recorded his first two-goal game of his pro career against Providence back on October 12.
The Falcons head into tonight's action coming off a wild 7-6 win over the Norfolk Admirals on Friday night at the MassMutual Center. The Falcons had 11 different players record at least a point with Theo Peckham scoring a pair of goals, including the game-tying marker on the power play in the third period. Springfield rallied from a 6-5 third period deficit in the win last night with Tyler Spurgeon scoring the game-winning goal and earning the game's first star. The Falcons also tied an AHL record for the fastest two goals scored by a team when Gilbert Brule and Carl Corazzini scored just five-seconds apart in the first period. Bryan Lerg and Derek Bekar also scored for the Falcons while goaltender Devan Dubnyk recorded his eighth win of the season. Springfield remains two points behind Providence for second place in the Atlantic Division standings with a record of 8-4-2-1.
The Bruins skate into The Nest having defeated the Portland Pirates in a shootout last night by a score of 3-2. Vladimir Sobotka and Byron Bitz scored for Providence in regulation, while goaltender Kevin Regan stopped 24 of 26 shots on goal, including stopping all five shooters in the extra frame. Peter Schaefer scored the lone goal of the shootout. The Bruins have won two straight games and have a record of 10-5-1-0 on the season. The Bruins will conclude their weekend at home on Sunday afternoon when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack.
500 AND 600: A pair of veterans reached milestones in the Falcons' 7-6 win last night. Derek Bekar played in his 600th career pro game, including 460 AHL contests on Friday, while Carl Corazzini reached 500 career pro games. Bekar started his pro career with the St. Louis Blues organization after being drafted by the Blues with their eighth pick (205th overall) in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. Bekar played three seasons at the University of New Hampshire before turning pro and he has spent time with the Worcester Ice Cats, Portland Pirates, Manchester Monarchs, Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Falcons during his AHL career. Bekar has played in 11 NHL games, one with St. Louis, six with the Los Angeles Kings and four with the New York Islanders.
Corazzini started his pro career with the Providence Bruins back in 2001 after playing four seasons with Boston University. The Framingham, MA native has played in 454 career AHL games seeing time with Providence, Hershey, Norfolk, Grand Rapids and Springfield during his AHL tenure. Corazzini has also played in 19 NHL games, 12 with Boston and seven with Chicago.
BACK FROM STOCKTON: The Falcons recalled defenseman Josef Hrabal from their ECHL affiliate, the Stockton Thunder, after Friday's game. Hrabal has played in eight games for the Thunder collecting four assists. He made his Falcons debut on October 24 against Albany collecting one assist.
ADDING SOME OFFENSE: Gilbert Brule collected one goal and one assist last night giving him four goals and two assists for six points in his last five games. Brule has two multi-point games in that span.
BRUINS PLAYER NOTES:
Vladimir Sobotka is currently on a four-game scoring streak having collected three goals and four assists for seven points in that span. He has six goals and six assists for 12 points in nine games with Providence, while also appearing in five games with the Boston Bruins this season not collecting a point.
Martins Karsums is on a four-game scoring streak having collected three goals and three assists for six points in that span.
Martin St. Pierre is currently on a four-game scoring streak as well having tallied seven assists in that span. St. Pierre is second on the Bruins in assists with 13 and third in scoring with 16 points.
Johnny Boychuk continues to lead Providence in scoring with four goals and 14 assists for 18 points in 16 games played. The Edmonton, Alberta native is in his fifth pro season after collecting eight goals and 18 assists for 26 points in 60 games with Lake Erie last year.
