Adirondack Phantoms News Release
BINGHAMTON - Claude Giroux scored with 52.4 seconds left in overtime to give the Phantoms a 4-3 win over the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. With the win, the Phantoms go to 10-9-0-0 on the season for 20 points and pull a point ahead of the Senators in the East Division race.
The Phantoms sprinted out to a three-goal lead in the second half of the first period. The scoring started with just over 13 minutes gone in the frame when Jared Ross came into the zone down the left wing and blasted a slapshot from the left-wing circle. Jeff Glass made the save, but Patrick Maroon was along for the ride in the slot and fired home the rebound for his sixth of the season.
The Phantoms then picked up a pair of power play goals, the first coming with just under five minutes to play on a 5-on-3 situation. Danny Syvret wound up and fired a slapshot through traffic that beat Glass to the upper left corner for his fifth goal and 19th point of the season. The goal came at 15:10 and made it a 2-0 game.
Then with 1:07 to play, Michael Ratchuk converted another power play. His slapshot from the right point hit the skate of a Binghamton defenseman in front and slid past Glass, giving Philadelphia a 3-0 lead at the first break.
But the Senators then matched Philadelphia's feat in the second frame. After suffering through three consecutive shutouts and going 218:57 without a goal, the Senators broke through when Josh Hennessey came in on Aubin and launched an initial bid that was stopped. But the rebound came right back to Hennessey, and he backhanded it into a largely open net to make it a 3-1 game with 7:56 gone in the period.
Then at the 11:24 mark, Rob Sirianni was granted a penalty shot after he got behind the Phantoms defense during a line change and was hooked on the ensuing breakaway. He faked left, went back right and slid it between Aubin's left skate and the right post to pull the Senators within a goal at 3-2.
Danny Bois then picked up the equalizer on the power play less than two minutes later. Mattias Karlsson took a shot from the right circle that hit the post, but remained behind Aubin, and Bois rushed in to poke home the rebound and tie the game at 3-3 heading into the second intermission.
After a scoreless third period, the game appeared destined for a shootout until Giroux gained control of the puck in the Binghamton zone. He came down into the left circle, swerved around a defenseman, faked out Glass and slid the puck inside the right post.
Both goaltenders were well-used on the evening. Aubin collected the win by stopping 40 of 43 Binghamton shots, while Glass turned away 36 of 40 Phantoms bids. The Phantoms were 2-for-6 on the power play, and Binghamton was 1-for-5.
The Phantoms now head to Connecticut to take on the second-place Bridgeport Sound Tigers in a 4:00 start on Sunday. They return home on Friday night when they host the Springfield Falcons at the Wachovia Center in the second half of a Black Friday doubleheader with the Flyers.
