November 22, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, ME - The Pirates suffered a 6-2 loss and back to back defeats for the first time this year at home against the Wolf Pack. Portland scored first but struggled to keep the offense going throughout the game.
As part of the Pirates game, Brandon Bernier, age 11 from Auburn, ME won $1,000 in the NAPA Chuck-a-Puck contest during the Pirates game at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The contest was sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts. Bernier won the money by tossing a puck, along with thousands of other fans, from the stands onto a bulls-eye of the NAPA Auto Parts logo at center ice. Fans can purchase pucks for Napa Chuck-A-Puck at each home game during the regular season. Pucks can be purchased at all Pirates home games behind sections K and Q. For your chance to win NAPA Chuck-a-Puck, come to any Pirates home game. Tickets can be purchased by calling 775-3458.
The Pirates got on the board early into the first when Jimmy Bonneau threw a shot towards the front of the net, and Felix Schutz crashed the net and put the rebound home to put Portland on top 1-0. Schutz's fifth goal of the year also extended his point streak to five games. Mike Kostka picked up the second assist. The Wolf Pack responded around ten minutes later when Michael Sauer scored his first goal of the year on a point shot past a screen that beat Adam Dennis. Corey Potter and former Pirate Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau got the assists. Just over two minutes later it was déjà vu as a Brian Fahey point shot towards traffic in front was deflected by Devin DiDiomete past Dennis. DiDiomete's first AHL goal was assisted by Fahey and Patrick Rissmiller. Hartford took its 2-1 lead into the first intermission along with a 12-9 advantage in shots.
In the second period, the ice would tilt in the favor of the Wolf Pack. Artem Anisimov scored his fifth goal of the season from Vladimir Denisov and Brian Fahey. Justin Soryal added another late in the second from Patrick Rissmiller and Hartford took a 4-1 lead into the final period.
In the third, Portland couldn't turn the tide early on as Corey Potter scored from University of Maine alum Greg Moore and Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau to put Hartford ahead 5-1. The Pirates added one more goal in the losing effort as Mike Funk scored his first goal of the season from Colin Murphy and Nathan Gerbe on a wraparound. Matt Ford got his first of the season for Hartford a few minutes later with Jordan Owens and Tom Pyatt tallying the helpers as the Wolf Pack made the final 6-2.
Adam Dennis stopped 22 shots for the Pirates and took the loss. Matt Zaba made 27 saves on 29 shots to pick up the victory for the Wolf Pack.
