Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ON- The Brampton Beast (12-23-2) are progressing extremely well as a team, finally showing a cohesiveness that they have been striving for all season. The latest evidence is the Beast holding their opponent to a season-low in shots on goal, but it wasn't enough as the Elmira Jackals (21-15-5) scored a late goal to pull away with their second victory in two nights by defeating the Beast 4-2 on Pucks and Paws Day at the Powerade Centre.
The Beast were once again led by leading goal scorer Jason Pitton, who scored his team-leading 15th goal before being ejected from the game in the third period. David Ling also added a goal while Tyler Donati, Chad Painchaud, Bobby Hughes and Elgin Reid added assists in a game that saw Grant Rollhesier make 19 saves during the loss.
The Beast hosted a live pet adoption during the game that saw a couple of puppies find new homes. There were also multiple pet supply packages given away courtesy of Jenny's Pet Valu and a portion of all proceeds went to the humane society and dog shelters, amongst other things. Beast fans were invited to have their beast tag along with them to the game to help cheer on the team and also take a picture of their pup in Beast gear with a chance to win an even greater prize pack from Jenny's Pet Valu.
The first period was nothing like last night's game where the teams traded chances without any goals being scored. Just over five minutes into the frame, Elmira forward Justin Daniels put a shot on net that narrowly squeaked through the arm of Grant Rollheiser and Justin Kea was there to easily tap the puck home for a 1-0 Jackals advantage. Six minutes later, the Beast answered with a goal of their own. Fifteen seconds after a holding the stick penalty to the Jackals' Zach Tolkinen, Jason Pitton took a beautiful feed from Chad Painchaud in the corner after he and Bobby Hughes worked a give and go, and Pitton potted his team leading 15th goal and fifth power play goal of the season. Towards the end of the period, Elmira added their own power play goal on Matt Mackenzie's first goal of the year.
The second frame started off with both teams running the ice and very little defence being played. The run and gun style came back to bite the Beast when just over four minutes into the period the Jackals beat Rollheiser with a weak shot from the corner to make it 3-1 for Elmira. After that, both teams ramped up the defensive play and limited the shots on goal. The Beast outshot the Jackals 10-6 in the stanza, marking two straight periods they outshot their opponents and putting themselves on pace to match their season-low total in shots on goal.
The third period saw both teams exchange goals, with Elmira potting one six minutes into the frame and the Beast answering on the power play later on. After a high sticking call against the Jackals, the Beast set up in the offensive zone, with David Ling setting up in his usual spot on his off wing. Tyler Donati found Ling with a pass out of the corner that the five foot nine inch forward one-timed home to finish off a tic-tac-toe passing play that saw every Beast player on the ice touch the puck. The theme of the period, though, was the rough stuff, as the teams racked up 24 total penalty minutes in the frame.
The fun continues on Sunday when the Beast play the last game of their six-game home stand and three-game series against the Jackals at 2 p.m. on Literacy Day at the Powerade Centre. The Beast will be hosting a book swap, where fans will have the opportunity to swap an already read book with one that peaks their interest. Along with the book swap, the Beast will be hosting other literary activities that promote academia and family-related literacy. The Beast then hit the road for three games before returning to the Powerade Centre to take on the Allen Americans on February 5 and 6. February 6 will also be the night the Beast unveil their new Canada Beast jerseys. Tickets can be purchased online at bramptonbeast.com or by calling 905-564-1684.
