Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Jason Bast posted a hat trick and added a pair of assists and the Alaska Aces dropped an 8-5 defeat to the Idaho Steelheads before 4,493 fans at Sullivan Arena on Friday.

The Aces, who had not lost in regulation at home for an 11-game span (9-0-2), had the streak snapped by yielding a season high in goals (8) and tied another in shots allowed (44). Yet, they rallied from down 2-0 and 3-1 with a four-goal second period and newcomer Curt Gogol registered a multi-point game and a fight in his Aces debut.

Idaho jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period, starting on Jefferson Dahl's forehand bid at 13:10 then Jason Bast's wrist shot through traffic, from the right circle with 2:06 remaining. But Brad Cole generated the rally with his fifth goal of the season at 2:41 of the second period, a blast from the left point that snuck through traffic.

Bast restored Idaho's two-goal edge at 5:36 but Greg Wolfe responded with a shorthanded goal, a second-chance forehand bid over Henri Kiviaho at 8:09 to cut the deficit to 3-2. Olivier Archambault then finished his Aces leading 19th goal of the season, on a walk-out from the right circle at 9:49.

Gogol, who hammered Eamonn McDermott with a hit at the Idaho net in the opening minutes of the second period, electrified Sullivan Arena with his first goal in an Aces uniform and 4-3 lead at 11:30 on a rebound at the right post.

But Idaho restored their lead to 6-4 with three unanswered goals by the end of the second period. Jason Bast finished a turnover at the front of the Aces net just 38 seconds later, and Bast found Alex Belzile's tape for a one-timer on the power play at 17:33 to grab the lead at 5-4. Brett Robinson and Wade MacLeod then finished a give-and-go at the right circle with 1:19 left in the period.

Corbin Baldwin's sharp angled shot from the right circle, appearing to deflect off Gogol, drew the Aces to within a goal at 6-5 and Raphael Bussieres and Bryan Cameron threatened on a pair of shifts afterward for the equalizer. But MacLeod put the game out of reach with back to back goals, both at the crease, with 5:38 left for a 7-5 edge, then a power-play goal with 2:45 remaining.

Aaron Crandall took the loss on 36 saves.
