INDIANAPOLIS - In the fifth of ten head-to-head meetings between the two teams this season, the Indy Fuel vanquished the Evansville IceMen on Saturday at Indiana Farmers Coliseum by a final score of 4-1. With the win, the Fuel's fifth straight victory and sixth in the team's past seven games, the Fuel improved to 12-21-4-3 overall this season and with 31 points, remain alone in sixth place in the ECHL's North Division standings.
In a tight-checking first period, Kyle Stroh delivered the Fuel a 1-0 lead at 13:12, when the Vibank, Saskatchewan native poked a loose puck over Evansville goaltender Chris Driedger on the power-play with Justin Holl and Rhett Bly collecting assists on the play. Bly and Holl teamed up again to spring another extra-man Stroh marker at 8:27 of the 2nd and then, at 15:05 of the middle frame, a Pete Massar pass from the end wall teed up Stroh for his third goal of the game on an in-close one-timer that made it 3-0 Indy.
Evansville's lone goal came courtesy of Colin Murray at 3:16 of the third on a seeing-eye tip that brushed past the left shoulder of Indy goaltender Mac Carruth, but a Garett Bembridge empty-net tally nudged the Fuel lead to 4-1 in the game's final minute and sealed the Fuel's fifth straight victory. Stroh's three-goal effort marked the first hat-trick, and first natural hat-trick, in Fuel franchise history as Indy has now claimed at least one standings point in a team-record seven consecutive games.
Next up for the Fuel, it's a Sunday rematch with the IceMen with the opening faceoff set for 8:15 pm EST at Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. Full radio coverage begins with the "Jose Cuervo Pregame Show" at 8:00 pm over the air on CBS Sports 1430 WXNT-AM, online at www.cbssports1430.com and on smartphones everywhere via the free "TuneIn" Radio app with Fuel broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
