Hershey Bears News Release

After a long trip to Rhode Island Sunday, HERSHEY came up short in a 6-3 loss to the Providence Bruins Sunday at Dunkin Donuts Center.

The Bruins would strike first, as fans at Dunkin Donuts Center were just getting settled into their seats. Defenseman Matt Lashoff jumped into the play and scored just 1:18 into the game to give Providence a 1-0 lead. HERSHEY would rebound after a sluggish start to dictate the tempo the rest of the first period, outshooting the Bruins 10-4 and scoring twice to take the lead. Chris Bourque would tip in a Quintin Laing pass at 12:18 to tie the game at 1-1. Bourque's goal was followed in close succession by Alexandre Giroux's ninth goal of the season at 14:07. Despite trailing early, the BEARS took a 2-1 lead into first intermission.

In the second period, the Bruins would tie the game at the 2:30. Ben Walter scored his seventh of the year to tie the game at 2-2. Dave Steckel would strike a blow for his club a little while later at 4:21, scoring his third goal of the season from Pete Vandermeer. Providence would again battle back in the seesaw affair, scoring at 10:43 of the period on a goal from Kris Versteeg. The Bruins would fire just six shots on goal in the second period, and ten in the first two periods combined, but were still tied up with HERSHEY 3-3 heading to the third.

The Bruins would pull away in the third period when Petr Kalus and Walter would score in the first 4:16 to run Cassivi from the game. David Krejci would add an empty net goal to round out the scoring.

Notes: Defenseman Timo Helbling and forwards Jonas Johansson and Matt Koalska were among HERSHEY'S scratches Sunday. Even after Sunday's game in which every East Division team was off except for the BEARS, HERSHEY still has games in hand on every other divisional opponent. The P-Bruins will visit GIANT Center December 31 at 5:00 p.m. to round out the two-game season series. Fehr's assist in the first period extended his personal points streak to 13 straight games. Former BEARS backstop Phil Sauve served as Providence's backup goaltender Sunday.
