Louisville Bats News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Despite a ninth-inning rally, highlighted by a two-run homer by Michael Siani, the Louisville Bats (62-55) ultimately dropped game five of the series against the Iowa Cubs (68-48), 7-5 on Saturday night at Principal Park.
After two quiet innings for both teams, Iowa combined a few walks with a couple of singles and a sacrifice groundout to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
Louisville fought back in the top of the fourth to gain back a run. Chuckie Robinson got the effort going by reaching on a fielding error. Following up with an RBI single, Matt Reynolds put the Bats on the board, now trailing 4-1.
The I-Cubs threatened to score again in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out triple, but righthander Randy Wynne secured two more outs to escape the inning without allowing a run. Wynne came on in the second inning in relief of starter Connor Phillips, and tossed 2.1 strong innings, giving up three hits without allowing a run while recording two strikeouts.
The Bats rallied in the top of the fifth, starting with a lead-off double by Drew Mount. Robinson then knocked a base hit single and Michael Siani drove Mount home on an RBI single, cutting Iowa's lead in half at 4-2.
Scoring again in both the sixth and seventh innings, the I-Cubs strengthened their lead to 7-2 and put Louisville at a five-run deficit.
The Bats fought back in the top of the ninth with a lead-off double by Mount, his second of the game. Siani kept the energy going with a two-run homer to chip away at Iowa's lead, making it 7-4. After loading the bases on three consecutive walks, Jason Vosler drew a fourth walk to score one more for Louisville. Despite the late rally, the Bats ultimately fell to the I-Cubs with a final score of 7-5.
Louisville will aim for a series tie in the finale tomorrow, Sunday, August 20 with first pitch set for 2:08 pm E.T. Reds rehabber Nick Lodolo (0-0, 0.00) will make his season debut for the Bats, taking on righthander Nick Neidert (5-5, 5.38) for the I-Cubs.
