Bats Fend off Late Comeback to Survive Stripers, 8-7

Louisville Bats News Release

GWINNETT, Ga. - Nicky Delmonico and Alfredo Rodriguez homered and Shane Carle made a smart play at home to throw out the potential tying run in the ninth inning as the Louisville Bats (3-5) staved off a late comeback to win 8-7 over the Gwinnett Stripers (6-3) Thursday night at Coolray Field.

With one out and the tying run 90 feet away in the ninth inning, Carle induced a weak grounder from Carlos Martinez. The Bats reliever fielded the comebacker and made a quick throw home to catcher Beau Taylor, who applied the tag on the potential tying runner in Abraham Almonte.

The Stripers initially pulled within one run after Travis Demeritte doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Carle, however, recovered to preserve the win and earn his first save of the season.

Mark Payton, Cheslor Cuthbert and Delmonico each registered multi-hit efforts for the Bats, finishing 2-for-4 on the evening. Cuthbert plated a team-high three runs in the win while both Delmonico and Rodriguez collected two RBI apiece with their two-run homers.

Vladimir Gutierrez earned his second win in as many starts for the Bats with three runs over 5.0 innings. Relievers Phillip Diehl (0.2ip) and Brad Brach (1.1ip) authored scoreless outings late in the game before Carle closed the contest for the Bats' first save of 2021.

The Bats and Stripers continue their series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Louisville will send RHP Riley O'Brien to battle Gwinnett's RHP Jasseel De La Cruz.
