Barons Weekly Report

February 28, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Oklahoma City Barons News Release

THE WEEK AHEAD: The Barons play twice this week, hosting the Abbotsford Heat (Calgary Flames) on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 at the Cox Convention Center. The Barons are in a stretch featuring 6 out of 7 inside the Cox Center. They went 1-2-0-0 during a 3-game homestand this past week to open that stretch and begin another 3-game homestand on Friday. The Barons are in the midst of playing 8 out of 10 at home leading up to a season-long 9-game trip from March 15-27. OKC is 14-13-2-4 at home with 7 home games remaining. The Barons are 18-8-0-1 on the road.

FEBRUARY FUN: The Barons wrapped up February with a 6-4-0-0 record. Despite the winning record, they were out-scored 26-18 for the month. February featured a pair of 5-goal losses to match their season high margin of defeat. The Barons' maximum goal total in a game was 3, while in their 4 losses they were shut out twice and produced 1 goal twice.

GIROUX LEADS THE WAY: With 1 goal this past week, Alexandre Giroux has 29 for the season, placing him third in the AHL behind Portland's Mark Mancari (32) and Hamilton's Nigel Dawes (30). Dawes was traded last week from Chicago. Giroux remains second in the AHL in points with 64, trailing only the 72 for Binghamton's Corey Locke. Giroux's 7 game-winning goals tie him for the league lead with Providence's Maxime Sauve. Giroux has goals in 19 of OKC's 60 games and the Barons are 17-0-1-1 when Giroux scores at least 1 goal.

GOALIES IN, GOALIES OUT: Martin Gerber was recalled by Edmonton last week to replace Nikolai Khabibulin, who was placed on IR because of an eye injury. It's Gerber second promotion this season, the other being an emergency recall in November because of a different injury to Khabibulin. Bryan Pitton was reassigned from ECHL Stockton to the Barons on Saturday for his fourth OKC stint this season and served as Jeff Deslauriers' backup that night vs. Houston. Pitton was unavailable on Friday, however, because he was involved in an auto accident as a passenger while attempting to leave Stockton. Scott Campbell of the CHL's Allen Americans spent one day with the Barons on a PTO as the backup on Friday vs. San Antonio. Dating to Pitton's previous stint with the Barons, he has won consecutive starts, Jan. 1 vs. Rockford and Sunday at Texas in a shootout, 3-2.
