Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND, OH -- A franchise record setting second period led the Barons to a 6-5 win over the AHL's best team on Wednesday night. A five-minute major for spearing against the Griffins' Darryl Bootland set the stage for Cleveland's record setting performance of six second period goals, including four on the power play.

The Griffins dominated the opening period out-shooting the Barons 12-6 and scoring twice for a 2-0 lead. Kyle Quincey opened the scoring with his sixth of the season on a slap shot past Barons goaltender Dimitri Patzold. Another Griffins defenseman, Brett Lebda, also scored as he tacked on his fourth of the year with 3:12 remaining in the period. Drew MacIntyre Made his 13th appearance of the year in goal for Grand Rapids.

An explosion of offense saw the two teams combine for eight goals in the second period, including six by the Barons who skated to a 6-4 lead through forty minutes. Mike Iggulden began the onslaught with his 21st of the year while the Barons skated with a five-on-three power play. The Griffins answered to reestablish their two-goal lead with Clay Wilson's short-handed strike at the 5:09 mark. The Wilson goal opened up a sequence of three goals in 67-seconds as Tomas Plihal scored on the power play at 5:49, followed by Tim Conboy's even strength goal 27-seconds later for a 3-3 tie. The Barons then took their first lead of the night on a short-handed tally from Plihal, his second of the game and ninth of the year. With that same power play intact the Griffins scored again to tie the see-saw battle at four goals apiece with Eric Manlow pushing a loose rebound under the pads of Barons goaltender Dimitri Patzold. Less than a minute later Grand Rapids' Darryl Bootland was kicked out of the game and issued a five-minute major penalty for spearing, which led to the Barons game clinching goals. Taking full advantage of the Bootland stick work, the Barons got power play markers from Matt Carkner and Tom Cavanagh for a 6-4 lead through forty minutes.

Matt Carkner (1+1=2), Garrett Stafford (0+2=2), Ryane Clowe (0+2=2), Tomas Plihal (1+2=3), and Lukas Kaspar (0+2=2) all registered a multi-point period for the Barons. Tyler MacGregor, with an assist, earned his first professional point.

Grand Rapids finished the night's scoring with the only goal of the third period. Valterri Filppula registered his 19th of the year to trim the Barons lead to 6-5, but that's as far as the Griffins rally would go. Jimmy Howard replaced MacIntyre in the Grand Rapids goal for the third period making saves on all nine shots he faced.

The Barons wrap up their home ice schedule for the regular season with tomorrow and Saturday, both starting at 7pm. Thursday night the Toronto Marlies hit the ice at National City Rink. Saturday, April 8th the Barons put a close on the home ice portion of their season with a game against the Hamilton Bulldogs.
