April 5, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release

Chicago Wolves left wing Karl Stewart has been named the team's Dan Snyder Man of the Year for the second consecutive season in recognition of his commitment to community service.

The honor is given to a Wolves player in memory of Snyder, who passed away on Oct. 5, 2003, after suffering major head injuries in a car accident. Snyder spent two seasons with the Wolves (2001-2003) and helped the team earn the 2002 Calder Cup Championship.

The Wolves will present Stewart with the award before the team battles the Iowa Stars at the Allstate Arena on Sat., April 8, at 7 p.m.

"It's quite an honor to win the award two years in a row, but it's more of an honor for me to get involved in the community," said Stewart, who has registered a career-high 18 goals in 65 games with the Wolves this season. "The feeling I get when I see a kid smiling during an appearance is amazing. I get the chance to meet our fans one-on-one. That's something I cherish."

Stewart served as a player spokesman for the Wolves' most successful education program, "Read to Succeed," which is sponsored by Fisher Nuts and has reached nearly 370,000 children in 10 seasons. He has visited more than 50 libraries during the past three years to speak about the role that education plays in his life as a professional athlete and to encourage children to spend more time in libraries; to read recreationally; and to understand the importance of education.

For the second consecutive season, the Aurora, Ontario, native initiated a program with the Lutheran General Hospital Teen Life Ward and Shriner's Children's Hospital so he could visit young patients on a monthly basis. He spent time with the patients and their families, while handing out goody bags and signing autographs. When they were well enough to attend, he hosted patients and their families at Wolves home games.

Stewart was the signature spokesman of the Wolves "Adopt-a-Dog" program this season, which works in conjunction with the City of Chicago's Department of Animal Care and Control, encouraging fans to save a dog's life by adopting during a Wolves game. The program has helped find homes for more than 400 dogs in the past five seasons.

Throughout the season, Stewart has also volunteered to assist other team charity efforts, including the Wolves' "Toys for Tots" drive, sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps, and the annual players' wives' fundraiser, which raised money for the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization and charities associated with former Wolves center Dan Snyder.

Stewart is also a finalist for the American Hockey League's 2005-06 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the league's Man of the Year. He has a chance to become the fifth Wolves player to earn league-wide honors when the AHL announces the winner on Mon., April 10.
