2005-06 AHL All-Rookie Team announced

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today the 2005-06 AHL All-Rookie Team, as voted by AHL players and media in each of the league's 27 member cities.

The team consists of one goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards.

Each All-Rookie Team member will receive a custom designed crystal award in recognition of his selection to the 2005-06 AHL All-Rookie Team.

Previous selections to the annual AHL All-Rookie Team include Dan Cloutier (1997), Jean-Sebastien Giguere (1998), Zdeno Chara (1998), Brendan Morrison (1998), Marc Savard (1998), Daniel Briere (1998), J.P. Dumont (1999), Robert Esche (1999), Dan Boyle (1999), Cory Sarich (1999), Dmitri Kalinin (2000), Rico Fata (2000), Jonathan Cheechoo (2001), Michael Leighton (2002), Barret Jackman (2002), Jason Spezza (2003), Michel Ouellet (2004), Cam Ward (2005), Chris Campoli (2005), Thomas Vanek (2005), Rene Bourque (2005) and Brandon Bochenski (2005).

2005-06 AHL All-Rookie Team

Jimmy Howard, Goaltender (Grand Rapids Griffins): A second-round choice by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Jimmy Howard has been outstanding in his first professional season out of the University of Maine. The 22-year-old native of Syracuse, N.Y., owns a record of 25-5-2 in 33 appearances with the Griffins, including a personal 12-game winning streak from Feb. 25 to Mar. 31. Howard also appeared in four NHL games with Detroit earlier in the year, earning the victory in his debut against Los Angeles on Nov. 28.

Daniel Girardi, Defense (Hartford Wolf Pack): A 21-year-old from Welland, Ont., Daniel Girardi first cracked the Wolf Pack lineup on Nov. 12 and has excelled in his rookie season out of the Ontario Hockey League, recording eight goals, 30 assists and a plus-14 rating in 60 games for Hartford. Girardi, who won a Memorial Cup with London in 2005, put together a six-game scoring streak from Feb. 24 to Mar. 4, a stretch that included four of his 11 multiple-point games this season.

Mike Green, Defense (Hershey Bears): Washington's first-round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Mike Green has tallied seven goals and 29 assists for 36 points in 52 games for Hershey this season. The 20-year-old Calgary native has also skated in 22 NHL games for the Capitals, recording a goal and two assists. Green, a First Team WHL All-Star for Saskatoon last season, tied a season high with three points - including the game-winning goal - in a victory over Portland on Jan. 21.

Patrick O'Sullivan, Forward (Houston Aeros): Patrick O'Sullivan is having one of the best debut seasons in recent memory, scoring more goals than any other AHL rookie in the last 15 years. The 21-year-old native of Winston-Salem, N.C., currently places fourth in the league's overall scoring race with 85 points on 44 goals and 41 assists in 73 games for a Houston team that has been among the league's leaders all season. A second-round draft pick by Minnesota in 2003, O'Sullivan was named the Rbk Hockey/AHL Rookie of the Month in both January and February.

Martin St. Pierre, Forward (Norfolk Admirals): A 22-year-old forward from Embrun, Ont., Martin St. Pierre made such an impression in Norfolk this season that he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 3 and made his NHL debut the next night. Selected to play in the 2006 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic, St. Pierre ranks third among AHL rookies in scoring with 20 goals and 46 assists in 71 games for the Admirals, his 66 points representing the second-highest total in club history.

Ryan Shannon, Forward (Portland Pirates): In his first pro season out of Boston College, Ryan Shannon has been one of the offensive stars for Portland in 2005-06, currently second in the AHL's rookie scoring race with 80 points (24 goals, 56 assists) and second in the entire league with a plus/minus rating of plus-26. The Rbk Hockey/AHL Rookie of the Month for October, the 23-year-old from Darien, Conn., began his rookie season with an eight-game scoring streak, then reeled off a nine-gamer in January and a 10-game run from Feb. 17 to Mar. 10.
