Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif.. - The River Cats bested the visiting Reno Aces by a score of 6-4 at Raley Field on a Saturday Night that saw Travis Banwart (1-0) strike out the 308th batter of his River Cats career, vaulting him ahead of Dan Meyer (306) for most in franchise history.
After former River Cat Kila Ka'aihue put the Aces ahead 1-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the first, the River Cats batted around in the bottom half, plating four runs on three hits and four walks.
In the top of the second, Banwart made history, striking out Reno right fielder Brad Snyder. The punchout was his 307th as a River Cat, surpassing Meyer's career total of 306. Banwart would strike out one more batter before exiting after 3.2 innings pitched, having allowed just one earned run on three hits.
The River Cats tacked on another run in the bottom of the second when a Matt Davidson error brought Grant Green home. Sacramento scored its sixth and final run when catcher Stephen Vogt clubbed his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. Reno scored three times in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Dan Otero shut the door in the bottom of the ninth, earning his third save, and giving the River Cats the 6-4 win.
Despite entering the game hitting .521, Vogt increased his batting average with a 2-for-3 night at the plate that included two walks and the fourth-inning round tripper. Vogt's league-leading batting average now stands at .529 in 12 games played.
Pedro Figueroa earned the win for the River Cats, giving up two runs in 2.1 innings of relief. Daric Barton was the only River Cat other than Vogt to record multiple hits, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.
River Cats right-hander Dan Straily (2-0, 1.42 ERA) will take the mound at Raley Field on U.S. Bank Sunday Funday at 5:05 p.m. against Aces righty Chase Anderson (1-2, 4.67 ERA) in game two of the four-game set.
